When SouthSide Willie got here, they immediately gave him
that number. D'Angelo Jimenez then wore it. Now Uribe.

For Willie, it was his projected number of times on base that season. For Jimenez, it was his IQ. I can't think of what the logic was with Uribe.

I'm leaning towards pure coincendence....Unlike in Football, a player can select any number that isn't being worn or retired....

I remember hearing something about Willie wanting his current number when called up, but it was being worn by somebody else; and since Ray-Ray still wears five in San Fran, I would assume that was his original choice. Not sure about Uribe or what he wore in Denver.

Harris had #12 originally (his college number I believe, i know he has #12 tatooed on himself), switched to #13 when we got Robbie Alomar, and now to #1 because Ozzie's back. He's never worn #5 AFAIK.

Durham was 1/5th the HR hitter he thought he was, but could only fit the denominator onto the jersey.

Didn't Carl Everett wear number 5 last season too? I remember when he first got to the team after the trade he was wearing 27 then he switched.

Yeah he started wearing number 5 after D'Angelo was out of the system.

I guess that is what I was asking all along, Dont the SOX
ASSIGN you a number, not really leaving it up to the player to pick (unless hes a star player or something)

Players can request a number, the Sox tell them if it's been retired or who has it. That player then can try to make a deal (or bribe) the player who currently has the number they want and if so he gets the number.

If it's a player like Harris, Perez or Olivo (somebody with little status) a guy like an Alomar or Everett come come in and get it. Getting Ordonez's number or Thomas' is practically impossible.
