Bruce Levine talking about color schemes. He wants to see all green. He says it will make the Cell one of the most beautiful parks in the MLB. Willsy agrees.

Brian26
04-13-2004, 01:17 PM
Levine agrees with me that Jose Valentin needs to change his approach at the plate. (ie trying to get on base or trying to hit 3 run homers every time he is up to the plate). Defense isn't an issue. It's his approach at the plate.

Levine is reporting that the Sox have offered Mags a 4-year deal worth close to $50 million, with an option for a 5th year and additional bonus incentives (Translating to about $12.5 million a year).

Nice news.

That would be incredible news if he accepted it. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Seems like a reasonable offer to me. Then again, I am not making $14MM this year.

Brian26
04-13-2004, 01:27 PM
Exactly-

He'd actually be taking a small pay cut, but with added security of 4 or 5 more years. Who knows where the market will go. It's a risk on Mags part to take it, but hopefully he loves the southside enough to take that chance.

Let's see if Jose can back up his comments about being able to hit Mays today.

I think that's the key. Where the market is at. Deals like Arod's won't happen again and you never know where salaries are going. I think Maggs should take a deal similar to that.

Brian26

Frank's 14th home opener with the Sox. It's a beautiful thing.

Go Sox.

I don't think the risk is too great for him. That security will be nice. He doesn't have to go any further than asking his 1B/DH what life can be life w/o it. I think the market is down and at most he'd be passing up a couple of million in exchange for not having the hassle of switching teams.

I also don't think the chance to stay w/ Ozzie should be taken too lightly. Ozzie is afterall, the one that suggested that the Sox give Maggs a chance.

That sounds like great news to me. However, why take a pay cut! It's the classic Chicago-owner move.... Why offer him more when you can pay him less, and lose him!

Prime example: Nick Saban!

I like the idea of trying to get Maggs signed early. However, I doubt Maggs will accept this trade. I would offer him about 55-60 if he declines. The security in having him the next four years should add to his break out year this year, as well as give us the opportunity to trade Bochard and some of our other outfield prospects!

04-13-2004, 01:56 PM
I think Mags has said he doesn't want a pay cut. However, I think he would like the long term aspect of the deal, especially if the 5th year is a player's option.

A paycut from what? 14 million?

I'm sure that the final year of this contract will be lower than the final year of his next contract. Vlad got 15 a year and Maggs doesn't have Vlad's Speed or defense so giving him an equal contract is not fair to us, but I do think that 12.5 mil a year is reasonable and that he should accept.

But maybe it would be better to offer that 5th year guarenteed. I think he wants years more than anything

I'm really excited about today's game. I wish I could be there. I can't even watch it on TV. But, at least I can listen to the game on the radio while I'm at work. I'm also going to try to keep up with this thread while trying to do my job.

I hope Loaiza is on his game today. KC is proving to be a very good hitting team.

GO SOX!!!!

Uribe comits a two-base error after two out. The Sox have to avoid giving teams extra outs.

no runs
no hits
1 error

Good job Esteban!

Nick@Nite
04-13-2004, 02:23 PM
Two out error by Uribe...

last week when the Sox were in KC, the Royals radio types here in MO were impressed with the Sox defense, basically saying that opposing teams could no longer simply put it in play against us...

after Manos in NY, and now JU just now, I hope we go back to giving the perception our D is improved...

GO SOX!

Love the idea of Rowand bunting runners to 2nd and 3rd so early - as opposed to the lazy fly ball and a quick first out. That kind of stuff is going to help the Sox a TON this year, I think.

He only had 1 K, which is prolly the most worrying thing of all. This guy lead the lead in K's last year, hopefully they havent figured him out and its just a matter of control.

Kotch was throwing about 91-93 mph. not 97 like earlier but he looked good. real good. if it wasn't for a passed ball and E-4 it would have been a lot smoother ninth. Great Win! the exact opposite of the scrubs. can't beat that with a stick.

The gun seemed lower all around than the one in KC and NY last week. My MLBTV gun was showing ELo topping out at 89-90 too.

I'm glad to see Koch get in there and do his thing... but if the score is 12-5 Btm 9th & Sox on top, why not give Marte the chance to build his confidence?

Ozzie already said Koch was his closer... but after witnessing Marte's meltdown firsthand on Opening Day, I would have preferred Marte in today's mop-up role...

... Marte's role is to come in and shut down the other team in the 7th or 8th inning... if anyone needs some work, it's him.

I agree. Takatsu as well. We need to know if he is going to be a viable option out of the bullpen ASAP...before we bring him in when we have no other options and he gets pounded.

Overall a very nice day. The park looked half full at the start of the lineup introductions but looked like it was a late arriving crowd as it seemed full by the middle innings.

I liked the aggresive base running, I hope though that the Sox can limit their baserunning mistakes. (can't do a thing about umpires blowing calls...)

One real area of concern for me (outside of the bullpen) is this...just how many errors are the Sox going to make this year? Sooner or later those are going to jump up and cost them in games lost.

From ESPN.com:

"Bud Selig has promised an immediate investigation of both Chicago baseball teams after the White Sox defeated the Royals in their home opener 12-5, one day after the Cubs lost their home opener to the Pirates by a score of 13-2. After most analysts had predicted that the Cubs would win 120 wins during the season while the White Sox would win only 70 games, the south side ballclub now finds itself with a better record than their north side counterparts. When asked what prompted the investigation, Selig replied that the White Sox winning more than the Cubs, even if temporary, is 'just bad for baseball.' "

One thing that I have learned about white sox baseball, errors are a part of it. simple as that. If we score enough runs then they won't matter. I am dreading the loss of games because of them but untill we shell out NY Yankee money, then we will have to make a trade off. Even Soriano makes a ton of errors, but he makes up for it.

I was wondering what you were going to complain about today - loaiza giving up HRs or the D. :)

I agree - the errors are gonna come back to haunt us eventually - but for now, I am thrilled with how this team is playing.

One could argue it already has. The Sox lost by a run on Sunday and they gave up an unearned run after Jose's bad throw.
