Birmingham beat West Tennessee behind Arnie Munoz -- whose line looks a lot like Diaz's, but an inning shorter:

A Munoz (W,1-0) 6 2 0 0 0 6

Birmingham's got no hitting. They're going to need a lot of outings like this one.

The Sox decided just this winter to convert Munoz to a starter. He's only 5'9", 170, and there will always be questions about whether he has the stamina to start -- but by all accounts he has electric stuff. It's a little too early to label him the lefthanded Pedro Martinez, but we can dream, right?

At any rate, he's only 21, and starting will prepare him for the majors more quickly. We should see him sometime this year.

Arnie Munoz posseses a Zito type curve from the left side, and when he is on can be unhittable. He mixes it well with a moving fastball and a decent change.I don't have a lot of confidence in converting him to a starter, but I can easily see him being a closer down the road at the MLB level.I think this experiment is more to build his arm strength than to actually make him a starter.

But then again, what the hell do I know? ©
