We weren't the only team that lost in our opener yesterday. We weren't the only team with high expectations that lost our opener today or in the history of baseball. Yes it was frustrating to watch but it only counts for one loss. What if we'd only scored two runs yesterday? Our record would be the same. We'd have just as good a chance of winning the division. I certainly wouldn't be all that upset about it. I'd say well Anderson pitched a really good game we'll get 'em Wednesday.

The only reason to be really upset is to draw way too much about the pen from only one, horrible game or to obsess over momentum and the team's energy. Marte, Politte, and Koch won't have double digit ERAs over a full season, I promise. Ozzie was hired purely to manage the team's attitude and psyche so one devastating loss shouldn't derail the entire season.

Good point jeremyb1. This helped clear my head, which was full of morose thoughts since the 9th inning yesterday.

To further the contrast, Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy is now on Day Two of his anti-Pedro witchhunt. In Boston, they really know how to whip up the hysteria:

"Pedro Arrogant! Francona Weak! Panic Panic Panic!" (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2004/04/06/respect_for_manager_just_didnt_show_up/)

When did anyone have high expectations for the Sox this year?

Some of us are good at deluding ourselves.

"This is the year!"

"We will win the division and crush the Yankees in the ALCS!"

"We will destroy the Cubs in 4 games in the WS!"

"Our players will win every award!"

"The Cubune will sell the north side franchise and they will move to Portland!"

"We diehards will be lauded like kings and queens!"

"Our children will rule the world!"

"Our enemies will wander the darkened earth searching for food, worshipping our likenesses!"

etc etc...

There are alot of people here that think the Sox can win the Division (possible since the AL Central appears to be crap) then..... and to quote the majority of them..... "Anything can happen in the playoffs."

Those are pretty high, though diluted, expectations.

That is questionable.

jeremy is always sensible, but there's also something to be said for the Twins and Royals winning in their last at bat, while we choke away yet another game, like the many we did last season. Obviously, it just doesn't bode well. Especially since we were all concerned about the pen coming into this season. We're going to be lucky now to get home from New York 2-4.

All the other teams in the A.L. will beat the Royals, b/c their pitching is absolutely horrible. Brian Anderson as your #1 guy doesn't bode well for the season. There is a reason why no other team has had 4 lefties in a rotation before...it's b/c the MAJORITY OF THE LEAGUE IS RIGHT HANDED! Hello!

The braves were swept in 3 games in their opening series last year. They proceeded to have huge offensive contributions from unexpected people like Marcus Giles and Javy Lopez and won 100 games.

Just saying...

Yanks started 1999 with a 1-3 record. We all know what happened...

Boston (with Pedro pitching) got spanked by Sidney Ponson and the Orioles Sunday night....
