My wife told me that she read in the paper that Baines told reporters about being hired bench coach for the WhiteSox..."YOu may not be able to tell it from the look on my face, but I'm excited.

That is a great quote. I have an old book called "Baseball Quotations" That quote definately needs to be in the new version, if they ever come out with one.

The only time I ever saw Harold show any kind of emotion was in the clubhouse after clinching the 83 division. He was still mellow but was laughing and having fun with the champagne.

I'll wonder if reporters who covered the Sox in the '80's and missed that quote regret not being there when it happened.

I'll agree Harold is very soft spoken, but in all the years Joe Nossek was the bench coach, I've never heard him speak.

Harold Baines- "The saddest man on earth." The guy always looks like he's one second from bursting into tears.
