If there was one more move i would like to see the white sox make before the season started, it would be this.....

Trade Maggs to a team for a bonafied #2-#3 starter and a decent replacement for magglio. IMHO i would like it to be to anaheim for washburn and erstad.

If i do recall, washburn was signed to a 5 million deal and erstad is owed 7.5 million. This would save 1.5 million off our payroll, which would make JR happy. Our team would look pretty decent:

Lineup:

Darin Erstad
Willie Harris
Frank Thomas
Carlos Lee
Paul Konerko
Joe Crede
Jose Valentin
Reed/Borchard
Olivo

Starting Rotation:

Buehrle (18-21 W)
Loaiza (16-18 W)
Washburn (16-18 W)
Garland (14-16 W)
Schoenweis/Person (10-12 W)

Bullpen:

Danny Wright (Long Releif)
Mike Jackson/Schoenweis/Person (Long Releif)
Kelly Wusnch (Lefty Specialist)
Cliff Politte (Setup Man)
Damaso Marte (Setup Man)
Shingo Takatsu (Setup Man)
Billy Koch (Closer)

With this team, we not only have a solid bullpen and rotation, but our offense is similar to last years, minus magglios power, but with a true leadoff man. This added to the fact that we have Ozzie and not Manuel is a sure formula for success, and i think wed win our division next year.

So here is my one last move i want the sox to make:

Trade magglio to anaheim for washburn and erstad.

GO SOX!!!

Ah, realism!

I prefer the bliss of ignorance and am holding out for keeping Maggs and Harris/Scheonweiss making the All Star team.

If its a true leadoff man you are after, I'm not sure Erstad is guy you're looking for.

I do agree that we need a 3rd starter and Washburn seems about as good as anyone who we have a shot at acquiring. However, I still want to see what is happening with Freddy Garcia.

Obviously he wasn't non-tendered, but has he signed yet or is he headed for arbitration?

First of all, what I'd most like to see is Maggs signed to an extension at a reasonable market rate (i.e., $10 or $11 million/year). However, if the Sox have explored that possibility to the end and Maggs is intent on testing the free agent waters, trading him makes sense and I like your idea in theory (e.g., a solid middle of the rotation starter and a decent outfielder).

However ... Erstad is absolutely horrible offensively and he is owed a ton of money over the next four years. I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot poll. The Sox would be much better off trading Maggs for Washburn straight up and then signing Mondesi to a one year deal (not that I'm advocating such a move - just that it would be better than trading Maggs for Washburn and Erstad) because Mondesi is a much better replacement for Maggs and would be much cheaper than Erstad. Actually, with that in mind, I'd probably try to deal Maggs for a solid starting pitcher and either a solid bullpen arm or a really good pitching prospect and then sign Mondesi (who I think probably could be had for 1 year, $2.5 mm). Finally, the Angels already have a surplus of outfielders, so I don't see them taking on Maggs - unless, perhaps, the deal was Washburn and Jose Guillen. But I'm not too high on Guillen. Plus, it would be hard to keep track of which big mouth Guillen was causing trouble if there were two on the team.

The only way Erstad should be considered a replacement for Mags is if heneeded a stand-in while filming a new Pepsi commercial. And even then Erstad wouldn't do a very good job.

Erstad is their current 1b, because they completed their outfield with Anderson, Vlad, and Sanders. None of those guys are a defensive liability, and having Maggs as a DH seems unlikely. They may be willing to deal Washburn from what I heard, but Erstad is a keeper unless a 1b were dealt. Not a terrible idea, but I think we could do better. I would prefer to deal him to the dodgers for a current starter, and just one of their infamous prospects. If they weren't willing to do that, and they might not, then forget it. I would rather keep him and make a run in the division this year, and give Reed another year to develop. I want to see an effort to sign Maggs, but if he has his heart set on leaving, then I would be satisfied, not overjoyed, to see Reed take over and have that cash.
