He signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers...

They also signed Rick White, although that's their loss. :)

So...there's another cheapie that the Sox let pass...

Don't we have enough corner outfielders and first basemen?

He struggled last season, and can only play the corner outfield or DH spots. We have plenty of those.

Yeah, I seem to remember him coming up in some other threads, though.

He'd actually be fairly useful, if the Sox could move Konerko...make Frank play first, and then you'd have a very good place for him.

As it stands now, though, you're right, we have no use for him. But signing him to a minor-league contract and inviting him to spring training certainly would have been low-risk.

The Sox had no use for Giambi unless they were to trade Konerko first.

Can't say that I know much about Rick White. Check that, I can't say that I know anything about Rick White. I do suspect that we picked him up to replace Paul Quantrill who bolted for the Yankees. But I do know that the Dodgers have a long history in grooming pitchers and that their pitching coaches know what to look for in the mechanics of a pitcher. They adjusted Mota's mechanics and added a real good change up to complement his fast ball. It should be real interesting to see how Rick White progresses during the season.
