From the Rocky Mountain News:
...the Rockies have begun substantive discussions with Rick Licht, the agent for Royce Clayton. He went through the free-agent process a year ago and signed with Milwaukee for $1.5 million.
After Clayton, a career .255 hitter who turns 34 on Jan. 2, hit .228 with 11 homers and 31 RBI in 146 games, the Brewers declined their $3 million option for 2004 and gave Clayton a $290,000 buyout.
The Rockies are the first choice of Clayton, a solid defensive player. He lives in Scottsdale, Ariz., and he and his wife, Samantha, are expecting their first child. Clayton's parents live in California.
It is believed the Rockies, with their payroll constraints, would be able to sign Clayton for a low base salary with annual deferred sums that would be modest and lengthy.
Finances are not paramount with Clayton, who re-signed with Texas when he became a free agent for the first time after the 1998 season and received a four-year, $18 million contract.
