Not to detract too much attention from the Maggs/Nomar trade speculation, but I saw that the Sox are now among the teams most interested in Maels Rodriguez - the Cuban pitching defector this came in a little under the wire.

$8M as a starting point seem high given that Contreras didn't exactly light it up in Bronx.

Here's a snipit...

Rodriguez, a 24-year-old right-hander who reportedly throws close to 100 miles per hour, could be the most talented Cuban defector to make a bid for the majors. Plans to schedule a tryout for them around Jan. 8. However, there have been questions about the health of his arm, as Cuban official have said Rodriguez lost 15 mph off his fastball resulting his his being dropped from the country's Olympic qualifying roster.

The agent, Henry Vilar, told the Times he would use the four-year, $32 million contract Jose Contreras signed with the Yankees as a starting point and listed the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Orioles, Mariners, Rangers, White Sox and Marlins as the most interested of the more than 20 teams to have contacted him about Rodriguez.

If he lost 15 mph from his fastball, is it wise to be plunking 8 mill for 4 years into this guy?

What I find interesting is that if his agent didn't think he had the stuFf - he wouldN'T be scheduling a workout in January. If he's damaged goods - it will show on 1/6.

A 100mph fastball could be worth $8M, but an 85mph fastball feels more like $1M.

Greg Maddux throws an 85 MPH fastball.

I bet he signs for more than 1 mil per.

But what if Billy Wagner woke up and could only throw 85 MPH?

Greg Maddux is a proven commodity that has had success pitching at 85. This guy hasn't.

I broke 50 MPH on the gun at the All-Star Fan Fest -- I'll gladly take $500,000.

Yeah, me too, and I'd take the MLB minimum of $300K - but I'm not holding my breath.

I'd take a chance on this 100 mph kid, but not for $8 million per. No way is he worth that much money right off the bat.

Contreras was a proven winner in Cuba IIRC and he got Yankee money. He was not very good during the season and was hurt for a while, but late in the season and in the playoffs he was dang good. I think Contreras wins 10-14 games next year as their fifth starter. That splitter is wicked.

Are 10-14 wins worth $8 million a year? :?:
