If we were able to sign Nomar, we could realistically deal Valentin to Seattle for Freddy Garcia

I'd say that Nomar for Maggs straight up doesn't make us any better. The two players' bats are similar at least relative to their positions. Both players make the same salary this season and it would be very difficult for us to resign either. The biggest benefit of a Nomar trade might be that its possible he'll generate greater PR than Maggs. If Williamson is in fact included that's a major upgrade to our pen, but we'd be adding salary we supposedly don't have and we could probably get the deal done for just the prospects we're sending if Maggs/Nomar weren't in the equation.

Problem with that move is that we'd still be adding salary and it seems likely Garcia will be non-tendered if we don't trade for him, giving us an option to sign him much cheaper.
