We are well into destructive phase of the 2004 Sox roster renovation project and it's not a pretty sight. The roster is a shambles, gaping holes abound, and it will get worse before it gets better.

The free agents are leaving or have left, but there are still arbitration-eligibles to be non-tendered (Daubach, Wunsch, Schoeneweis???), and we still have the big salary dump trade(s) that have been hinted at. (1 or 2 from Maggs, Valentin, Konerko, Lee, Koch)

When this is complete, the constructive phase begins and it will not be easy. Sox management will patch together the products of our salary dump trades with some second and third tier free agents, hope for some magic from the depleted minor leagues, and head into 2004 with a hodgepodge roster led by a rookie manager.

Unlike the Upper Deck project, it's difficult to see how this operation will yield a superior product. Fortunately, the Sox are in the moribund AL Central, where even the Tigers can dream.
