Joey Cora has apparently spoken to Thomas. From the article: (http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb_news.jsp?ymd=20031205&content_id=612596&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb)
Cora explained that Guillen was simply trying to light a fire under Thomas, who surpassed 400 career home runs and 2,000 career hits during a tremendous resurgence in 2003. Guillen mentioned at the press conference to announce his hiring that despite Thomas’ powerful prowess, he would be expected to execute situational baseball much like everyone else on the team ... But Thomas was being used more as a symbol to show off Guillen’s aggressive style, as opposed to being held up as a scapegoat.
I believe Hal Vickery wrote as much in an ealier article that appeared on WSI.
