Chuck Comiskey promised Earl Battey that he would always be part of the Sox organization. He said that he cried when he had to deliver Battey the news that Bill Veeck had traded him to the Senators.

I'm sure he's crying again. I know I am.

So long, Earl!

Not to reduce a man to numbers but for anyone who didn't know him or remember him

April 4, 1960: Traded by the Chicago White Sox with Don Mincher and $150000 cash to the Washington Senators for Roy Sievers.

One of the worst trades Veck made.

I sent PHG an obit piece. Spoke with some of his former teammates tonight. It should be up at WSI in the near future.

One of the worst trades Veck made.

Considering Veeck also traded Norm Cash and Johnny Callison, that's saying something!!! :(:

Folks:

Two points to consider about this period and all these deals. (I'm not saying the deals were good or bad)

Remember the quote in Vanderberg's book that I used in the obit piece about Veeck saying Lopez told him that Al was NOT going to play Battey or Romano.

Two... these guys that Veeck got (basically Sievers, Freese, Score and Minoso) were not his first choice. Veeck talked with the Cardinals and wanted Bill White. He talked with the Giants and wanted Orlando Cepeda. Get those two guys and I'd be willing to bet the results in 64 and 67 are different just like they would have been had he kept Callison, Cash (he of the corked bat!), Romano etc...

Veeck felt that the Sox had to have power to repeat and he got away from the team that did win using pitching, speed and defense. Perhaps a lesson for today's White Sox organization still trying to win while hitting 220 home runs a year.

If you are Mark Miptek who wrote the article on the WSI main page, thank you for a well written piece.

I am a mod/admin at Soxtalk. I do not see us as rivals with WSI. I have been a member here a long time but post seldom. There are many things that I appreciate WSI for and one of them is articles like yours. I posted a link to it on Soxtalk because your article deserves the widest possible audience, as Earl deserves the good memories and being remembered by as many fans as possible.

Daver, if I did wrong to post the link to a great WSI story at Soxtalk, email me and yell at me. However, I just felt this situation and great article was something that united two sites which really aren't rivals. And some folks do not know that we really have a lot of friendship between us.

Earl Battey.
Rest eternal grant Earl O Lord
and let light perpetual shine upon him.
