Word to the Braves: let Kerry Wood pitch to you, and stop swinging at that **** people are erroneously calling "great pitches."

Ouch, sounds painful. It will make the eventual Cubbie Collapse that much sweeter, though.

Will the Braves hitters be patient tonight? Or, are they going to swing at the first pitches and through fastballs down the middle?

kittle42
10-05-2003, 07:35 PM
Well, I think it's just the odds here.

Ortiz did fairly well yesterday on three days' rest. Hampton sucks.

I was listening to the radio yesterday during the game and I believe it was Jim Durham on ESPN Raido who read off the stats of guys pitching on three days' rest since 1999 in the postseason. It was (not counting 'ol Russ) 4-16, 6.something ERA. Not good.

cheeses_h_rice
10-05-2003, 07:43 PM
If the Braves are going to help out Wood as much as Castilla did on that last AB (which should have been a 5-pitch walk), then there's no reason to even play the game.

WhiteSox = Life
10-05-2003, 07:46 PM
I decided to do a little breakdown of Wood's pitching and here's what I found out via my eyes. I think this might be interesting.

Disclaimer: I judged only by what I saw.

Lopez
Without swinging
Balls - 4
Strikes - 0

Actual count
Balls - 1
Strikes - 3 and on what would've been a ball, a weak grounder to SS.

Jones
Without swinging
Balls - 0
Strikes - 2

Actual
Balls - 0
Strikes - 2 and a groundout on what would've been a strike 2.

Franco
Without swinging
Balls - 4
Strikes - 0

Actual
Balls - 4
Strikes - 0

Hmm... Franco showed some patience and looked what happened - he walked.

Castilla
Without swinging
Balls - 4
Strikes - 1

Actual
Balls - 2
Strikes - 3

Strike two wasn't even close to a strike. And he K'ed on another ball. The pitches had really good break, but weren't ever really strikes.

So, the Braves go down.

Was this count supposed to show anything totally relevant? Well, not necessarily. It's a lot more difficult to read a pitch and to swing or not to swing appropriately. All I'm trying to prove is a little patience would not be a bad thing for the Braves.

Braves are my favorite NL team, so yeah, I'd be watching. With bells on.

But the way the Braves' bats are going limply into the night, I'm getting more doubtful by the minute.

It doesn't matter what Cox does now or what happens. The fact that he couldn't get his team up and ready to face the Cubs in an elimination game is the most damning.

Granted, there's still time, but the Braves had been playing half-hearted. Hampton made two bad pitches and got burned for them. Wood has dominated the very impatient Braves hitters.

Is anyone else listening to the ESPN radio broadcast of this game? Joe Girardi is practically creaming his pants at the prospect of the Cubs advancing. Shouldn't they have impartial national announcers? It is quite annoying.

I think we are going to have to put up with another round of Flub Mania. What a nightmare season this has turned into.

Yes, let's all thank Dusty Baker for his fantastic job managing the Cubs... Meanwhile Hendry purloins from the Pirates, picks up veterans, and the starting pitching mostly dominates, with just enough timely hitting and the Astros implosion in the final week of the season. Yep, Dusty does it all.

And now, the awesome Sham-Me* Sosa.

Gut-wrenchingly repugnant.

...the Cubs certainly did win their first postseason series in 95 years. But on the other side of that page, they have not progressed any further than they did in 1984 or 1989. And hopefully, they have the same amount of NLCS success in 2003 that they did in '84 and '89. I look and see Cubs fans at Turner Field and now outside of Wrigley Field acting like they just won the World Series. They are carrying placards claiming the Billy Goat curse is over. Premature. It's far more accurate to say, "The Cubs won their first playoff series since the playoffs expanded in 1995." Of course, that wouldn't be as sexy. For the previous 87 years, a playoff series victory meant a World Series trip. Now it means a chance to play in the NLCS.

This year we had a great chance at the Central Division and we pissed it away in the last 10 games. Now we have to put up with the prolonged success of the Cubs to boot. I fear that JR has set us all up for another 3-4 year rebuild. By keeping all but one of the coaches, he hung up a sign that says, "Experienced Managers Need Not Apply". As much as I liked Ozzie Guillen (hence the handle), him or any other on-the-job training project is NOT what this team needs now. But I think that's what JR has in mind - another 1st time, no experience, works cheap manager.

Like I said in another thread, the Marlins CAN!! win and I can't wait to head over to Pro Player this weekend with my Sox cap proudly on, to watch the Losers get what they deserve...

And yes, I'm glad Im not there, but now I have my own problems

Was it really such a slow news day that we had to watch nearly an hour's worth of drunks closing down the streets in Wrigleyville?

Yes, the 94 strike did it for me....morale was quite low...to me that was the year...and of all owners to make it happen....

How you guys can stomach watching the post-farce crap on TV is beyond me. Stronger tummy than I have for sure.

IMHO, I'd like it to be the A's...

Gonna be awfully tough with Hudson going down today ... even if Zito and pen buries the Wrong Sox tomorrow

Dude, I really feel for you guys. I'm so glad I'm not there. It's going to be a bad few weeks, maybe a bad few years. I think the Sox should move to Portland and yall can move out here with them.

Seeing as how the MLB can hardly move the expos, I'm not sure how they could move the white sox. And why would they do that over other crap teams like TB?

I'm hitting the sack with this thought....

In 1989, right before I moved to this area and I lived in Kentucky, I watched the SF/Flubs series...and nearly broke my den's floor from jumping up and down when the Flubbies lost. Will pray that occurs again this go around....

Good Luck to the A's. I don't like the Boston Fake Sox either, their fans are just as bad as sCrUB fans. If you don't believe me, just watch "The Curse Of The Bambino" on HBO.

Like them or not you have to give that organization credit. They hired a top manager for top dollars and brought in eight solid MLB veterans pushing their payroll to almost 90 million bucks.

Unlike the Sox, the Cubs finally "get it..."

The question is still on the table for Uncle Jerry and his organization...what are they going to do to meet this?

Lip, sorry, I don't buy it.

The fact is, the Cubs won the division because each and every one of their acquisitions during 2003 (and before, in the case of the Hundley for Grudz/Karros trade) turned out to be incredibly one-sided, in favor of the Cubs. Period.

They won their division by 1 game, and without each and every single trade they made, they wouldn't be there.

Money is part of it, but you have to admit that luck had a role as well.

Just look at the flubbies record in 1-run games this year and you can see that is the case. Much like the Sox in 2000 which came back to bite them the next year.

Guys:

"Luck is the residual of design."--Branch Rickey.

If that's the case can the Sox place a take out order for a case of "luck?"

Also something just worth considering. The Cubs play in a weak division with only the Cardinals close to them in terms of payroll and the willingness to spend money. The Cubs have three young guns who throw the ball extremely hard and if they stay healthy (always a factor) could be around for the next five years.

Unlike the Sox who didn't have that luxury, they may not be a "one hit wonder."

Those acquisitions were important, but the critical factor was the pitching -- which was largely drafted and homegrown in their farm system.

BS...their farm system development also roots from MLB's economic injustice. If the twins can afford Mark Prior's $10 mil signing bonus, he's not a Cub right now, because he goes #1 overall to the Twins in 2000, not the Flubs.

So yes, Wood, Prior, and Zambrano were all developed in the Flubs' farm system, but the big gun in that three would not be a Cub in a truly just world.

Thankfully, I'm not watching the news on any station.

I can just imagine a quote in some article tomorrow or the next day.

Here you go. Today's Sun-Times, page 4:

"About seven mounted officers stood at the ready, along with some two dozen patrolmen standing abreast on Addison as fans sang 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame," [led on by a WGN "reporter" trying to create the news, and apparently succeeding] At the stroke of 11 pm, just as the celebrants were getting rowdy, the officers moved in to break it up."

I added the line in bold, obviously.

You know, I am simply SHOCKED that they managed to put a camera on top of the flubbie bear bar in an effort to film fans celebrating and suddenly there were people there to film...
