Ortiz is missing his spots thus far, but escapes damage in the first, thanks to Moises "Only Player in MLB Slower Than Me Is Konerko" Alou's blazing speed.

Also, Froemming is not calling ANYTHING out of the zone.

Braves can't capitalize on Wood's usual early wildness. Sheffield is reverting to his usual postseason goat form -- the Frank Thomas of the Braves, if you will.

Not too mention Frank hit over .300 in 93. EVERYONE except Durham and Singleton choked in 2000.

I was going purely based on performance of late. Sheffield has disappeared in recent Braves postseason games, much like Frank did in 2000.

Anyway, good 2nd by Ortiz; a minimum of pitches and a 1-2-3 series.

Wood is on the verge of being just wild enough to let the Braves score at will because of the potential BBs. Unfortunately, Braves haven't been able to crack through yet. Nice defensive grab by Wood to end the 2nd, too.

The Braves' hitters are falling prey to swinging at Wood's garbage way out of the zone. They need to keep the bats on their shoulders more, and let Wood pitch to them.

It's hard with Wood though. If you get a pretty good or good fastball to hit, you almost have to swing, because if gets ahead in the count and goes to the offspeed stuff, it's over. But you are right, they need to make Wood throw more strikes.

Are you implying Sham-Me* takes steroids??? OF COURSE NOT!! Sammy would NEVER cheat, remember that cork was from his batting practice bat, which he uses to "make his fans happy"

It's a mystery to me

He mixed up his doctoring, put his cork in his cereal and steroids in his bat by mistake, then left $20K in cash in a brown paper bag in the batting cage before the game

way to hit into the DP ShamME!

Not to mention some iffy calls behind the plate by Froemming during key situations (though he's been missing some of Ortiz's strikes, too).

09-30-2003, 08:54 PM
I'm sorry, but all you NL purists, how can you justify liking this horsecrap when the pitchers come up to bat? It absolutely (for the most part) kills rallies, and instead you see guys like Ortiz trying to just put the ball in play.

Sorry, gimme the DH any day...

OK, Froemming gives one back to the Flubs -- Furcal called out on a ball at his ankles.

In the last 50+ years only one NL team has won the World Series with 88 wins, the 1959 LA Dodgers (88-68) (and we both know who they beat. That AL team had a record of 94-60).

On the AL side the 2000 Yankees (87-74) beat the Mets (94-68).

In 1945 the Tigers were 88-65 and they beat the Cubs (98-56).

In 1945 the Tigers had 88 wins and they beat the Cubs (98-56).

And '45 should be an asterisk, cause all the real players were in the service and not at the ballparks ... only reason the flubs got that far ... though it was a good thing as Billie tried to bring his goat to Wrigley

interesting predictions from the sportscasters the last couple of days ... as much as we've all heard the adage "good pitching beats good hitting in the playoffs" and seen it happen (see DBacks win and LaRussa's A's WS losses), I saw most commentators picking the braves over the cubs because unlike braves teams of the past, they have some real hitting, ditto for the A's and RedSox, where most are picking the Gammonsox for their bats ... Woods is proving them wrong tonight singlehandedly

At least I don't try to predict big games that the Sox are going to win eh guys? (and you know who you are...)

Folks, I take ZERO joy in making that statement about the Cubs...none, nada, zilch.

But it could very well be a reality in the next few days and you damn well better learn to deal with it. Just because it pisses you off is too friggin' bad.

Some of us have realized and warned of the consequences of the Cubs getting to a World Series before the Sox (who have had their fair share of opportunities and pissed every single one of them away )

Hell it's going to be bad enough if the Cubs win a single playoff series.

If folks like Hanger 18 were worried about the Sox becomming irrelevant if the Cubs got in the playoffs, wait till you see how the Sox are ignored if the Cubs win a few series. Ignored today, ignored tomorrow and ingnored starting next April.

That's a reality friends. I don't like saying it but that's the way it is.

Instead of ripping me in your condensending ways why don't you start e-mailing and writing our brilliant Sox ownership to ask if they are going to do anything about it or if they are going to continue making assinine statements like "Chicago has always been a Cubs town."

But that would take some work and we can't have that can we? It's much easier to rip the "pessimists" instead of getting off your rear ends and doing something. (By the way I wonder who the two "optimists" were who promised Pale Hose George that they were going to write some stories for him to publish and then bailed out? Typical...)
