The team helped rally in the bottom of the sixth to help him get # 20. After the game, he got the game ball, he got beer dumped on his head and then Olivo gave him his mit that he caught the game. At least something magical happened to this team.

Congratulations to Esteban, if there was one bright spot this entire season it was him. If he were not on this team we would be 10 maybe 15 games back. Both Colon and Buehrle were absolute disappointments so Loaiza's emergence was that much sweeter.

Here's to getting 20 E-Lo :gulp: !

And to think, earlier in the year we all had Buehrle and Colon labeled as our possible 20 game winners. I think we would have been satisfied with 11 wins out of Loaiza at the beginning of the year. Congrats Loaiza on a great season.

It was nice to have something to be happy about with this club after the dissapointment of the last week. Without Loaiza we never would've really had a shot this season so I'm happy for him.

Well said!

2003 Season
W L ERA
20 9 .296

By the way... only two other Mexican-born pitchers -- Fernando Valenzuela (21-11) and Teddy Higuera (20-11) -- have won 20 games, and they did it back in 1986.

Colon's 7 complete games was a disappointment to you?

My, what high standards you must have.

I hope Loaiza has finally figured out something that will last beyond this season. It would be wonderful if he could even come close to putting up numbers similar to this year's in 2004.

He had a combined ERA under 3 last year and 20 wins. This year, he has an ERA flirting with 4 and only 14 wins.

Despite the number of innings he's pitched, he's been a mild disappointment, yes.

Mild, maybe. He had a handful of games where he just wasn't himself -- I could probably chalk up a few of his losses to the Sox's offense not showing up behind him.

But "absolute disappointment" is how the original poster termed it, which I just can't agree with.

One of the best stories of the baseball season.

Starting pitcher for the American League in the All-Star game and a 20 game winner.

Congrats to Estaban!!!!

Maybe there should be an Estaban Loaiza award that goes to a guy whose had a mediocre career so far, then comes out of no where and has an all star year.

It's called the Comeback Player of the Year.

Congrats to Esteban for the great year--and to think I was on record this morning saying he wouldn't get #20. :D:

Maybe it's already called the Randy Jones award... see 1975 (and his Cy Young award year of 1976 <-------- Pete Rose once said he won the CY Award with nothing).

No I think Comeback Player goes to someone who had a good career, then got injured or had a bad year or two, then came back with a great season like Frank did in 2000.

Well, at least something good came out of this dismal month. Congrats Estaban on 20!

It just doesn't seem right. A 20 game winner, a 40 HR hitter, a batting champ contender, 2 hitters with over 100 RBI's & a 3rd on the way, yet in the end; nothing. Meanwhile, the buttclowns up north have one guy over 25 HR & 100 RBI's, 3 pitchers with .500 like records & a toilet bowl for a stadium, yet they get to keep playing after Sunday.

What is wrong with this picture? :(: :whiner:

Add 51 home wins to the equation as long as you are trying to figure out what went wrong.

Hey wait a minute................the road?

You'll never figure out this team. One year they wont be able to win on Sundays and then the next couple of years it will be the West Coast. Or the Sox will play good against the top teams in the East and bad against the cellar dwellers.

According to MLB.com, Colon has 8 complete games. He had some bad outings, but not that bad of a year. I want him back!

The Sox should be looking to extend Loiza's contract beyond next year. This month has thrown some doubt into him and other teams in the league, thus lowering what the market would give him. A Cy Young is still possible but voting is about a month away. I say 3 years at 5 milllion apiece will get it done.

You're right about Colon, I was speaking out of anger. But Colon hasn't been the ace we envisioned in the off-season, instead it was Loaiza.

Loiza did a great job this year. It seems that when you listened to the radio broadcasts, a couple of the games he lost he was not given the corners by the umpires. I listen to alot of games on the radio and I believe John Rooney to be a fair announcer. He also lost, I believe, two 1-0 games to Detroit. What a year!!!
It would have been nice for JM to put him out for at least one more pitch so the crowd could have acknowledged him and his feat.
