Torii Hunter....asked if they can put away the White Sox...."It starts tonight"...."we're hungry...we should've come out and won the World Series, and we want a shot at getting back."

He made a point I totally agree with. Shannon Stewart should be the AL MVP. He made the biggest difference down the stretch on any team. I watched the Twins almost every game the second half ( as I watched Sox games) and he came up huge all the time.

Wow, I haven't been this nervous for a Sox game in a LOOOONG time.....

But yeah, Shannon Stewart seriously deserves MVP consideration IMO. Numbers aren't gaudy or anything, but he turned the Twins season around.

For a wonderful explanation (from a Twins fan, no less) of why Shannon Stewart should not even be considered for MVP, please go to www.aarongleeman.com and check out Tuesday's entry. A sampling...

Shannon Stewart has been a very good hitter since joining the Twins and he was a good hitter for the Blue Jays this year too. Overall, here are his numbers:
AVG OBP SLG RBI RUN
.312 .367 .468 69 83

Those numbers are right around his career-totals of .304/.369/.449. Is .312/.367/.468 solid production from a corner outfielder? Absolutely. Is it anywhere close to an MVP season? No freaking way.

Stewart ranks 22nd in the American League in on-base percentage, 29th in slugging percentage and 29th in OPS (on-base % + slugging %). He's also 23rd in runs scored and 47th in RBIs. For those of you into "Win Shares," Stewart currently ranks 45th in the American League.

You write JUST WIN at the bottom of your post. When a player produces in big situations and his team turns around its entire season, the man deserves a look. Isn't that what it's all about?

mack10zie
09-17-2003, 06:32 PM
Just a question, don't know if you can get these stats, but I was wondering how his "win shares" compared to the rest of the league SINCE he was traded to Minnesota.

Jurr

All right, I did my job. I started betting on a website last week, and I'm already up $300 dollars. I'm on fire. I have kept to the mantra of not betting on your team due to emotional attachment. (Even though I did put 50 on the Bills to beat Jacksonville last week...a 3 point spread????)

But, ladies and gents, I'm putting my money and my hot streak on the line to give a kharma boost to the Sox. I bet 20 dollars straight up in honor of the man who needs to come up big tonight.

This is all we need. The game's outcome was in the balance until now. It's over...we already won. I hope.

Lee
Thomas
Maggs
Everett
Konerko
Crede
Valentin
Alomar

I think it may be helpful that Crede and Konerko are back to back in the lineup instead of sticking jose in between there.

Hopefully it will lead to 20 more runs than last night

The "Just Win" is more in reference to Sox fans worrying about Minnesota's schedule, but I digress...

In addition to all the points Aaron makes in his blog, I think it would be foolish to give an MVP award to a player for his effort in about half the season's games. One of the few instructions for MVP voters is to consider "number of games played." Stewart's first 90 games in Toronto are nowhere near MVP-worthy -- a sub .800 OPS.

Alomar may be a deciding factor tonight. He has alot of RBI's off of Rogers. I hope they don't steal alot though cause it's not like he has a cannon. Look for the Twins to be aggressive on the paths.

If you're looking for Alomar to get RBIs, then the deciding factors would be Crede and Valentin getting on base tonight. Tough to drive in runs with no one on base, even if you do have a good history against a pitcher.

Crede's a big boy. He should know what to do. JM shouldn't need to straight out tell him he doesn't need to hit a home run.

That being said, JM's job is to get into a conversation with Crede about his approach. That doesn't happen, and I bet if someone asked JM why it doesn't happen, he'd say, "Well, Joe's a major league hitter," or something to that effect.

Six outs, six pop ups is disgusting. It ain't all Rogers. It's a weak team approach ... thank God Everett knew he didn't need to hit a home run.

EDIT: And credit to Konerko too.

Both of these games have had the umistakable feel of a Sox playoff game from the outset. The feeling is one of inevitability and frustrating impossibility. You just know that as a Sox fan, victory in these defining moments will not happen.

And the long entrenhed history of the reoccurance of that "feeling" is where all of the pessimism at WSI comes from.

It just feels like a sickly cycle of budding hopes being dashed in a rather painfully mundane manner.

The Heimlich Maneuver for CHOKING
A choking victim can't speak or breathe and needs your help immediately. Follow these steps to help a choking victim:

1. From behind, wrap your arms around the victim's waist.

2. Make a fist and place the thumb side of your fist against t
he victim's upper abdomen, below the ribcage and above the navel.

3. Grasp your fist with your other hand and press into their upper abdomen with a quick upward thrust. Do not squeeze the ribcage; confine the force of the thrust to your hands.

4. Repeat until object is expelled.

This team has shut it down I think. This sucks, especially living in Minnesota. Im out 70 bucks. Even if they swept the series I still wasnt that confident because of the twins ridiculously easy schedule. But now it looks like they might get swept and then its over. They are a better team than the twins, but not playing like it. Oh well, hopefully this will at least punch manuels ticket out of town.

I agree ... it's time to let him go. He had one good season and this so-called "clubhouse leadership" has gotten us mostly second-place finishes. Let him go, fire Manuel, and get a real clubhouse leader to be--surprise--the MANAGER. It won't ever happen in the Reinsdorf power vacuum, but we can hope.

Then Alomar gets rung up on a high pitch and starts arguing with the home hump. When your catcher starts arguing like ALomar did, it's getting unfair.

If we lose this game, I predict it will only get worse from here on out. We will probably get swept tomorrow, lose two of three to both the Royals and Yankees, and then split with the Royals to end the season. Which should put us just over .500 in third place.

I was just thinking the same thing. Might have to bring a sign that says "We Gone"...(I hope not though, still semi-optimistic)

this guy is ****

This ump has been absolutely horrible, but we've been trying to fight back from swinging 0-2 counts all night. It's hard to throw around the blame when that happens.

I'll be there for the last four games of the season, regardless (I already have my tickets). If you show, we both can take on the entire blue-pajama-clad stadium of fools.

Out of sight, but present inside the Metrodome, a black-clad figure waits in the shadows...

is that the Sox are playing in the biggest games of the year and I can't bear to watch the games because this 'Corpseball' makes watching this team unbearable, just like the first half of the year.

Alomar might have made it if he didn't slide.

I think he would have.

Also, it's absurd Kenny Rogers has only thrown some 65 pitches.

The Twins deserve to win the division. They may not be the better team, but they played like it when they had to. They had to have a split in Chicago and they got it, they need to wins 2 here and they are gonna do it, and they will beat the brains out of the Tiggers this weekend.

We played with no heart, no real good plan, and they looked beat as soon as Jon gave up that homerun. They aren't patient at the plate, they no nothing of the notion of small ball, and it finally has caught up to them. All that said even with all the ups and downs I was entertained, and maybe next March when hope springs eternal we can try it just ONE MORE TIME!!!!

pressure and the frustration building on the Sox here ... and a catch like that don't help!
