I alluded to the fact in a post before that the Twins are like vampires, and you need to drive the stake through their heart when you have the chance.

The Twins can put up a 3-spot like that -- *snap* -- so the Sox need another run or three here.

That was some playoff pitching right there. Bartolo absolutely took control of the game, knowing he probably wouldn't be out there for the 8th.

Men on second and third. Great catch by Bartolo. Next two batters, Bartolo is hitting 101 with his fastball. He strikes one out, and gets the other to pop up. Huge, huge, huge. THAT is how you get to the playoffs.

cheeses_h_rice
09-08-2003, 09:20 PM

There are no playoffs if we don't win at least 3 of 4 from the Twins this series, and beat them the next time we see them.

That said, Colon is at the end of his line, I think; if he gets 2 quick outs here he's done, and if he puts anyone on base, I'd say he's done, too.

This wouldn't be based on any empirical data, but Colon seems to be one of those "keep-it-interesting" guys.

Sabermetrics would undoubtedly disprove that.

I don't think Colon should start the 8th. We've got a capable enough pen where we shouldn't need to worry too much about closing it out.

I think Bartolo will be out there on close watch in the 9th ... when Coop was on the phone at the beginning of this half of the eighth, he looked like he was talking to Bartolo, seeing what he wanted to do. I bet either Gordon or Marte will be ready to go, but Bartolo will start the inning.

If the Sox can hold on to win this one, it will be one of the few times where our offense completely shuts down after the 1st inning yet we win comfortably...I would rank that tendency up there with their most annoying traits.

That win goes to Bartolo Colon 95% (and give 5% credit to Everett for that big hit in the first inning). Colon worked his ass off. Kudos to KW for picking these two guys up.

the sox jumped on the twins when they let their guard down. that's the makings of a great team. no doubt the twins played 200% after that inning to stop the bleeding.

Great win, but seriously, doesn't it at all worry you that despite numerous scoring opportunities, the Sox weren't able to push across a run in their last 7 innings? A foot here or there on certain plays (Jose's leaping grab, the ump's call down 1st base line where it could have been fair) and I could see that game being easily 5-5 or even 6-5 Twins.

There should be a memorandum on not being able to call "Corpseball" on games that we're WINNING. I'll take a 1-0 win where we score the lone run in the first inning over a 15-14 loss any day.

Right. And, no mention of Corpseball after the Sox score at least 5 runs in a game, which they did tonight. 4 to 5 runs is pretty good and doesn't merit the moniker, IMO.

However, if the Sox don't score somewhat similar to tonight's game after the first, Cadaverball is still usable.

GO TWINS!

That kind of post is what I like to see. If roles were reversed tonight, I like to think I'd be able to say something similar to the Twins fans on here (with the requisite Jerry Manuel bashing lying therein as well, of course).

The Twins started coming back in the second and got me worried. I don't see them laying down the next three games, and may the best playing team win.

GO SOX!

Whew......I can't take 19 more games of this! (The post season if the Sox get to it will seem tame by comparison...)

Considering the Twins are throwing a guy who hasn't pitched in the bigs since 1994 Tuesday night, the Sox better beat the snot out of him. No more of this score early then take the rest of the night off garbage.

If they can win tomorrow they have a great shot to take three of them.

No mention of Corpseball PERIOD. No team scores runs every game or every inning. This team has played inspired baseball since the all-star break. Enough with the excuses...

Just win baby!

If we win tomorrow, we have a great chance at a SWEEP. Why settle for 3? Guys, we have an AWESOME baseball team here. This team can beat any of the opponents we have ahead of us. You know we can beat Minnesota. You know we can beat KC. You know we can beat the Yankees. And despite the two games at home vs Boston, we can beat them too. No Excuses....JUST WIN BABY!

If the Sox can take all 4 games in this series, they will have somewhat negated that "easy schedule" advantage that the Twins have. Don't forget that they face the freaking worst-team-since-1962-Tigers 7 more times, and oh, the Indians too.

Yeah, I walked up and bought one in the RF LD corner. About 7 rows behind where Steff usually sits. The seats were "limited view" because I was right behind the foul pole. Which means that I couldn't see the HP ump, but the rest was all good.

Right after Carlos double in the first a 5 YO kid sits down beside me with his grandpa and grandma. The kid is right beside me and he looks at me and says, "Are you a Sox fan? I'm a Sox fan." I knew right then and there that the Sox were going to win. Of course it might have been the beer... :D:
