The Sox need this game badly. If they can salvage the road trip (to some extent), they will at least be able to return home feeling good about themselves. I don't think Anaheim will be a problem in Chicago.

So Manuel doesn't play Frank at first this roadtrip. Maybe Paulie can come up with the bases loaded and less than 2 out again tonight and hit a grounder to short or a broken bat soft liner right to someone.

I know exactly where you're coming from. Manuel is killing this team by keeping Frank at DH. If using Konerko at DH is really that much of a problem, why doesn't he just alternate them depending on who's swinging the bat better? Now that I mention it, he did say something like that just prior to the end of the first half.

Add that to the list of more meaningless garbage from "The Tinkerer."

What an amazingly stupid time to try and steal a base. We're up against a pitcher we can probably hit in the first inning. Why risk being thrown out?

Cotts sucks!! He should not be pitching at this level, nonetheless during a pennant race. KW's inability to get us another starter at the trade deadline is coming back to haunt us.

FJA
08-17-2003, 08:48 PM
What is really going to haunt us is not picking up another reliable bullpen arm. Unless Cotts does some serious settling down AND they let his pitch count go around 100 (which I doubt they will do), we are about to run into some serious bullpen fatigue problems. Who the hell is going to pitch today? Wrong pitched 3 yesterday, Wunsch pitched 2 yesterday, Adkins and Schoeneweis both got in some significant work the day before. There is NO ONE in that bullpen we'll really be able to extend.

WHarris13

I think it will be good to see how he responds in the 3rd. If, starting fresh, he can get a scoreless inning, I think we'll be in good shape ... hopefully we can get Cotts to go at least 5. Our bullpen is dying performance-wise, and innings-wise.

JJAustin69
08-17-2003, 08:53 PM
Sandy stop swinging at everything out of the zone. He threw you about 8 balls in that at bat.

Manuel ripped Frank for swinging for the fences. Every other hitter on the team is doing the same thing. This problem is bigger than just one man. Something needs to be done about it.

ChiSox7

They better go out and score some runs for this man, because even though he gave up the 3, he's battling, and our offense isn't helping him out at all against a HORRIBLE pitcher. It's a joke. It does NO good to score runs when your down by 8. Why don't you guys go and try to give the man a LEAD.

Nice hit Everett, now lets get these guys home. 74 pitches for this guy. Let him pitch himself into a jam.

RKMeibalane
08-17-2003, 09:14 PM
With the exception of Carl Everett, the middle of the lineup has been dreadful. Frank has been struggling, and Maggs has cooled off since his red-hot month of July. Carlos Lee hasn't been right since Jerry "The Tinkerer" Manuel used him in the five spot for that Anaheim game.

Agreed. Maggs needs to be more patient at the plate. I've seen him swing at first pitches and hit weak grounders to third plenty of times to know that he's better off if he can see what the pitcher likes to throw, and then he adjusts.

Manuel just doesn't like Frank. He never has. If I were Frank Thomas, I would have Arn Tellem QUIETLY begin talking with other teams. There's no sense in being loyal to an organziation that doesn't want you anymore.

I'm reminded of something Will Clark said about the Giants running him out of town after the 1993 season:

"Loyalty is important to me, but loyalty is also a two-way street. I will never shut a door until a door has been shut on me."

I think Jerry Manuel is trying to shut the door on Frank Thomas.

Does Lee pay any attention to what Frank or Maggs does during the course of a baseball season? What about Esteban Loaiza or Mark Buehrle?

Honestly, some people on that team are a little too full of themselves. Lee isn't the only one, but he's the latest to put his ego on display.

Frank Thomas has made more than his fair share of mistakes during his career. He has said and done numerous stupid things, especially within the past four or five years. Having said that, Jerry Manuel is not "Mr. Innocent" in the ongoing soap-opera that he and Thomas star in.

Manuel is slowly sucking the life out of Frank's career. JM become the Sox manager in 1998. When did Frank start having difficulties? 1998. That's more than a coincidence if you ask me, and I'm not the only one who thinks so.

I would love to see Frank stay, but I won't blame him if he leaves. He has earned the right to do what's best for himself, as opposed to putting up with the bull**** thrown at him by the White Sox organization.

Frank Thomas is my favorite baseball player. If leaving Chicago will guarantee that he finishes his career on a high, then I'm all for him getting hell out of town. Jerry Manuel can kiss my ass.

I'm not really for breaking this team up. Assuming the team fades the rest of the way, I'm all for firing the manager. But there is very obvious talent on this team. What that talent needs is a good kick in the a**. No need to start from scratch.

RK asks: How does this team manage to **** up everything so badly?

I guess it all starts at the top...

Boy they really are horrible on the road.

I don't have the answers I wish I did. This club has an average seasonal record of 83-79 during Gandhi's tenure so I guess another .500 season shouldn't surprise anybody.

The only other thing I can think of is that the talent (particularly the minor leagues) isn't as good as Sox fans consistently think it is, that plus the field manager's decision's cost some games and I think particularly with the players who have been on the club for a few years, they know the Sox aren't going anywhere so when things go bad they have a human tendency to relax.

The Sox for three straight years have had long stretches where they play poorly. If the talent is that good, how do you account for that... other then they say "screw it.." let's get the year over.

Lip

I really don't like talking about breaking the team up UNLESS freakin Manuel goes with them. Look at it this way: The team sucks with TALENT and Manuel as the manager. How will they fare with NO TALENT and Manuel as the manager? Diss the players all you want, but there are at least 8 players on this team that were recently in the AllStar game, they can't be this bad.
