Olivo will hit eventually. For this year, his defense is the reason he's with the club. Remember, he was at Double-A last year, so he's still struggling with the basics at the Major League level.

Any team that is relying on the nine spot to provide offense has much larger problems............

I don't like our chances in this one. We have squandered too many oportunities to win. A win would be really lucky, especially away from the Cell.

He has a cannon. That's why he's around. He will hit once he learns the strike zone. Right now, he doesn't know how to hit, but the talent is there. I know he's not good, but give him time. He hits in the number nine slot for a reason.

I agree, Olivo looks absolutely foolish at the plate, but the last thing we need is Sandy getting overworked. Really, Olivo doesn't bother me as much as Paul "I made a great play so I think I'll take a break" Konerko and Jose "I swing at ball four" Valentin. That dynamic duo has already combined to leave 11 men on base. Only lucky teams win baseball games when that happens and we, unfortunately, are rarely lucky.

We are in serious danger of getting swept if this team mopes around like it sometimes does when we lose the first game of a series.

Bart has been pitching extremely stupid tonight. He hung that curve to Molina, threw that ball away on the pick off throw, and then, on a 3-0, he throws his hardest pitch of the night instead of making sure to throw a strike.

Come back and get them tomorrow. The Royals will not win the next two against the Yanks, you can take it to the bank.

Hell, Alomar doesn't know the strike zone either and can't really hit. A good hitting catcher is rare and expensive. Olivo isn't the problem.
The problem is that we have a veteran Valentin who swings for the fences every time and Konerko who has been in a fog all season. We've got to get a CF in here and really a new shortstop - and ones who can get on base and hit at least a sac fly when called upon.

Agreed. Let's try to avoid placing blame where it doesn't belong. Carl isn't the problem right now. He has been swinging the bat well for the past week or so. Prior to that at-bat, he had been on base three times tonight. It's not his fault the guys hitting immediately behind him in the order haven't done anything offensively.

Jerko
08-11-2003, 11:18 PM
Wonderful. I was thinking; Konerko HAS to play first every day cause his "defense gives us a better chance to win" and R. Alomar gets benched every 3rd day. The dropoff between Alomar and Graff/Harris is much wider than that of Paul/Frank.

I know, but he has to fix it sometime. Who would you rather leave out there, if you had to choose: a struggling Bartolo Colon, or a struggling Neal Cotts? I agree somewhat, but Colon always seems to get "hurt" when he is winning, he was in trouble there if he would have gotten run over covering home on that WP. I'd rather Cotts learn a hard lesson than lose Colon for the year. I also base what I said on not using 5 guys tonight, maybe just one besides Bart.

I hate these double plays. As for the bullpen being worn out, Wunsch, a lefty, warms up and then Shoeneweis comes in. Aren't they both lefties? If they are so fragile you shouldn't make one warm up and bring the other one in! He's not saving the bullpen doing that.

I don't approve of leaving him out there, but I also don't approve of Cotts being SOL if we can't use the bullpen tomorrow. Jerry has mismanaged the bullpen so badly the last few weeks, there really is not a good solution. If we go down four runs in the first tomorrow, I sure as hell don't want Cotts to have to stay out there like Colon did today. And I guarantee you Manuel will not leave him out there, thus screwing up our bullpen even more had we used them more today. Damage control sucks, but if we sacrifice tonight to make sure we have pitchers for the next two months, well, then I guess we'll all have complain about Jerry Manuel until we win a game. Jerry Manuel did not leave seven runners on base, or even four for that matter, if you can believe two guys have done this for the Sox today.

This games was very dishearening. The Sox came back in the ninth by trying to keep their swings short against Percival, but it seemed that, once the tying run was on, some of the Sox hitters started to get long. Why try to hit homers when bloops are what got you back into the game? I understand what they were thinking, but that stuff gets frustrating to watch.

I agree ... I wanted to believe that, despite all the horrible hitting with men on third all game, after batting around in the ninth, the Sox would get some clutch hits. Not so, and the Big Tease continues ...

I think what hurts more about this loss is that KC had a freak win against the Yankees; we almost did them one better, but came up short, and lost a game in the process. I like to think that we can only worry about ourselves, but when you look at the highlights and see them come through with clutch hits against a team that scores nine runs, and us fall short, it sucks.

Absolute abortion tonight. Colon and the pitching was awful, the situational hitting was worse.

But don't worry, the latest Sox "can't miss kid," Neal Cotts will save us tomorrow. Yea the Sox didn't need to grab any additional pitching over the Winter!

and how about the Royals "collapsing" tonight against the Yankees! LOL. God we suck, just don't have the mojo this year...same as last year...and the year before...

72 hours ago the Sox were in first by a half game. My how quickly things can change when you lose 2 of 3, while the team that some folks SWEAR is going to collapse any day, now wins three straight.

This is classic Lip. Who else would interpret a loss directly resulting from the failures of several "trusty vets" (e.g., Colon, Schoenweis, Konerko, Valentin, and Alomar) as an indictment of the Sox younger players? As usual, your logic does not resemble our Earth logic. Give up your pointless campaign against youth.

"Lip is correct. Colon is a 20-year-old infidel rookie. He must be driven from our lands. Instead of trading for Colon, the Sox should have signed free agent Greg Hibbard, that great veteran of many epic battles."
