To Whom It May Concern:,

As a historian researching part of Chicago’s past, I need your help. Could you please publish my request for information from your readers?

“Disco Sucks”- July 1979 Comiskey Park

As a historian, I am writing a book on the 1979 “Disco Demolition” rally in Comiskey Park. If you attended the game (or simply remember hearing about the event), please send me your memories and/or thoughts.

Thanks for your valuable assistance!

I wouldn't use the word "rally" It was more like anarchy (but I use "anarchy" in a neutral sense).

Dr. Hughes, if you haven't already you might want to go over to Steve Dahl's web site. Dahl's web site has an active forum section. Dahl's web page (http://www.dahl.com)

The real story is not Comiskey Park and the White Sox but Steve Dahl.

Dahl at the time was working at WLUP in Chicago and had a huge following. He was the original shock jock and plans of taking a local radio show national which was not only unheard of but way ahead of it's time. Dahl promoted the event through his radio station and it cumulated to a fever pitch on the day of the double header with the Tigers.

30,000 to 40,000 people who under normal circumstances never would have considered going to Comiskey Park showed up.

The Anti -Disco promotion was a disaster because it was between games of a double header and the second game had to be forfeited by the Sox because security couldn't keep the kids off the field.

I don't think Sox management or even Steve Dahl had any idea that people would be scaling the walls to get into the Park. It's not like Sox management had their heads up their ass and was irresponsible such as nickel beer night in Cleveland or having the Hell Angels as security for a Stone's concert.

Two or three years ago I was at the "Pitch & Hit" dinner, an annual January event put on by Chicago baseball writers, and one of the speakers was Mike Veeck.

He opened his speech, "If there is anyone here I haven't apologized to yet for Disco Demolition...." That got a bigger laugh than any of the jokes told by the comedian they'd hired for the "entertainment" portion of the event.

not sure if it's of any interest in regards to the book... but there's a dutch techno act called "THE PARALLAX CORPORATION" that samples steve dahl saying "this is the largest anti-disco demonstration in the world" and then the crowd chanting "disco sucks" over and over.

i thought it was pretty interesting when i heard that, and i have no idea how some guys in Holland got audio of that event.

Thanks! and I am sorry for the double post. I am a bit lost on the boards.

You guys should check out this great WSI story that I assume he was referring to above:

http://whitesoxinteractive.com/History&Glory/DiscoDemolition.htm

Anyway, keep it coming and, your right hose, the real story is not Comiskey but rather Dahl and, for me, the whole Disco Sucks movement as an interesting historical/cultural phenomenon. I was part of it as a young man and I am still not sure if I completly understand it myself.

Thanks,

RH
