QUESTIONS FOR STATS GUYS:

1. Where does the offense White Sox rank as far as Fly Balls to Ground Balls?

It seems to me that the Sox hit a lot of fly ball outs.

2. How often does Frank Thomas swing at the first pitch? How does Frank compare in that stat to the rest of MLB?

From what I've observed, Frank does not swing at many first pitches.

I can't find the stats, but he swings at very few ... from what I've noticed, unless he thinks he'll be able to hit the first pitch out of the park, he doesn't swing at it. I've read several places where they mention this to his credit. Guys who look at the first pitch--strike or ball--generally have great OBP.

Found it. After 374 AB, Frank has swung at the first pitch only 29 times (at least that's how I read the following line ... maybe someone a little better with stats can correct me if I'm wrong) ... he has 7 hits.

By Count AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG
Count 0-0 29 0 7 3 0 0 2 0 3 0 0 0 .241 .313 .345

OPS .658

Here's the Link. (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?statsId=4527)

If anyone else interprets these stats differently, or if I'm reading them completely wrong, by all means, chime in.

I thought that meant he put the ball in play 29 times, hence no K nor BB.

When he swings and hits the first pitch he bats .241 ... not too good, ehh? He's also been hit by the first pitch 3 times

Enjoy

I don't know where we can see if he swung and missed at the first one, bet I'm willing to bet it's around the same number or about 10 more ...

Thanks ... I knew something was wrong with my reading.

Either way, though, he doesn't swing much at the first pitch, and when he does, he's not terribly successful.
