Go Sox!

I know it's early. I'm leaving for the game in a few minutes...

Can we shave Hawks head again after 10 wins in a row?

Not a bad top half of the first. Guiel got hit leaning almost over the plate, stole a base, but still failed to cross the plate. Not bad.

No runs, no hits, no errors.

Nope. I'm going tomorrow night, though.

Not a good first inning for the Sox, defensive-wise. Luckily they got out of it.

Nice drag bunt by Robbie.

Hawk & DJ said they'd never seen any manager come out of the dugout in that situation and tell the pitcher to intentionally bean the batter.

OKCSoxFan
08-04-2003, 08:31 PM
LOL -- Sweeney couldn't get to Chicago due to "shutting down the airport" but then in the hurry of getting there, hurt his back again.

Excuses, excuses. They've already mentioned a couple times how tough the Royal lineup would be with him in there tonight.

It sounded like they were saying that the pitch just got away from Run Elvis -- that it wouldn't make sense to hit Frank in that situation (even though, yes, it did make some sense, setting up the force at 3rd/2nd). I guess trying to downplay any potential animosity that could arise as a result.

This is painful. We face a pitcher who can't throw a strike and doesn't have a second pitch -- managing a meager two runs.

Now the General pulls Garland early and KC is slashing away. It's not over yet, but this game should be a blowout.

I agree. I have a feeling that Manuel just looked at Garland's numbers and decided to pull him. What a moron! This is just more proof that Manuel sleeps during games. Had he been awake, he would have known that those runs weren't Garland's fault.

I will not get involved in these damn games anymore. These aggrivating royals show how baseball should be played, with drive and fundamental skill. Let's not fool ourselves with home runs. Even if they come back and win, it just isn't right to keep pissing away games like this. Some acquisition. I thought this guy was supposed to throw quick. Whatever, its not worth discussing anymore. If I were you, I'd turn if off now and check the score later on. No point in giving yourself a heart attack. Really.

Game synopsis thus far:
1. Sox offense leaves too many men on base.
2. Sox offense doesn't take enough advantage of Run Elvis' lack of control.
3. Kansas City takes advantage of every single Sox miscue, scoring on accidental bunt hits, seeing eye singles, and the occasional solid base knock.
4. Sox pitching fails yet again to shut the door after a huge momentum shift their way.
5. Jerry Manuel takes out Jon Garland too early
6. Schoeneweis is awful.
7. Matt Ginter is awful.
8. Sox defense has led to several unearned runs.

Am I missing anything?

"Well, regarding my decision to take Garland out, I just felt that he had given us everything he had up to that point. He had already given up three runs. The grounder that Konerko misplayed started that rally off, but three runs is three runs. It doesn't matter how those runs scored. The pitcher is the man responsible. So, I did what I had to do."

Questionable call to end the seventh. I think they should change that rule regarding a player swinging and being hit. As far as I'm concerned, the fact that the batter is hit should negate the swing he took at the pitch. Olivo started to swing, but then tried to get out of the way the ball. I don't think it's right to call him out in that situation.

Having said that, since rules are rules, the umps need to make sure they call things both ways. If anything like that happens again tonight when the Royals are batting, they had damn well better make the same call.

What exactly is the ruling?

It looked to me like Olivo started to go around and then tried to back off, got hit in the hand, and ended up taking an official swing. So, does the swing overrule if he got hit first? I don't think that's right, if that's what happened.

Without a replay, though, I'm flying blind here.

Taking out Garland was the worst decision of the game. Manuel is blowing this. He wasn't even in any real trouble. Then we give up craploads of runs without getting an out. JM has to be kidding me. I don't feel confident when he pulls a guy going fine after 75 pitches ... he still has no idea about a staff. Berroa got a hit on a good pitch, and then he pulls him. The result showed you how bad that move was.
