This from the Trib:
Even after acquiring lefty Scott Schoeneweis Tuesday from Anaheim, Williams remains in the market for another pitcher.
"I had hoped to do something else today, but that doesn't look like it's going to materialize because the price is too steep," Williams said.
"Some of the things left out there for the players we have targeted, the asking price is unreasonable right now in our estimation. And you know if I'm saying it, it is. I'm not exactly afraid to take a chance here or there."
The Sox have spoken to the Orioles about right-hander Sidney Ponson, but the talks died down about a week ago when Baltimore officials wouldn't budge on their demand for third baseman Joe Crede.
Although the trading deadline is July 31, Williams could swing a deal in August for a player who clears waivers.
"I believe there will be some opportunities in August to pick up a guy off the wire," he said.
So he might have been referring to Ponson in that quote, but maybe that was a reference to his attempts to get Suppan. In the Schoeneweis thread, someone mentioned (in teal) that maybe Kenny was using Schoen as a pawn in a trade for another starter, considering we have a glut of lefty specialists in our 'pen. Or could Kenny be planning on holding on to Schoen and trading one of our other lefties?
