In the lower right hand corner of each post is a button that says "quote" just click that instead of reply, and you'll get a reply window with the desired post "quoted" in it already.

I wonder how that works. IIRC, under the contract, Frank first has the option to re-new for '04 at some $ level. If he declines to do so, the Sox then have the right to do so at some higher $ level. So it's really a chess game. Frank has to decide (1) whether he thinks the Sox will exercise at the higher price if he doesn't exercise at the lower price; and (2) if he thinks the Sox will not exercise it, can he get more in the open market than the lower exercise price.

With all that said, I'm sure that if the Sox wanted to tell Frank now that they're going to exercise the option, that would be all well and good. But I doubt they'd do that - keep him motivated to earn the big pay day.

I hope they limit his pitch count a bit today, particularly now that they're up by 5. I would like to see him under 110. I think they worked him a bit too hard in the 1st half.

But they are STILL just a .500 team. I'm not saying that CAN'T win under Manuel but there hasn't been any indication that they WILL win under him (and KW). The last 2.5 years are evidence of that. I hope we can back into the playoffs. We'll be dangerous.

Any thoughts on this rumor of SF being interested in Colon?

They need to win on the road to save Manuel's job. Winning at home hasn't been the problem.

By the way, as of right now, Ordonez is hitting over .300. First time in a lllooooonnnnggg time that a Sox regular was above .300.

I would think SF, StL and Boston would all be interested in Colon. But I don't see the Sox trading him unless they are 8 or 9 (or more) games out by the deadline at the end of next week. And even then, I think they might just trade Everett and/or Alomar and not Colon (depending, of course, upon what kind of offers they get).

On mlb.com's GameDay, if you scroll down on the box score on the right side of the screen, right below the pitching lines is a section "pitches-strikes" for each pitcher. Colon is currently at 92-62.

That was lucky for Manuel not a smart move. Colon didn't have it all inning. If you had taken him out after the second hit he might still have had a shut out and maybe we could have saved Marte for another day with a 5 run lead.

Jerry has no abilty to think out there. He manges on crutches, so if it doesn't work out he can always say well the rule is lefty lefty and so on. Marte can get hitters from both sides out.

Even with Marte being better at getting lefties out, he is effective enough at getting righties he is a better option then a tired, worn out Colon.

Glover or Sanders or Koch. They are safe enough with a 5 run lead - if you have a quick hook. Then bring in Marte if there is trouble. Or if you are concerned to perserve the shut out - Fine bring in Marte. But he needs to be quicker to pull Colon late in the game. He pitched a good game.

Except that Colon is a fly ball pitcher who tends to give up the long ball. You have just let one in and you have someone coming up and let him pitch to give up the two run homer?

I guess it wasn't the worst move with a 5 run inning. He must have been planing to help Marte have more save opps ; )

And what the hell the Sox win!!!!

Colon seems to be suffering from a lite case of the dead arm. Limit his pitch count in games that are not close, he should not have never started that inning. I would have brought in Koch or Sanders since you could get someone in there before he gave up 5 runs. It would be helpfull to get those guys some work, and this is a game to do it in. Instead we trot out one of our better relievers out there becuase of situation which never should have happened.

I don't disagree with that - as I posted earlier, I think they need to be careful with Colon because of his heavy work load already. But once he started the inning with Colon and Colon got into a jam with a right handed batter up, I think I would have stuck with him (unless, of course, you could tell in person that he was tiring -- I don't know if that's the case since I was "watching" via computer). I sure wouldn't want one of the "2nd tier" relievers in there, and with White and Gordon each going 2 IP last night, it seemed to me that Colon was the best option to face Blake.

In any event, I think the move was defensible. More importantly, very nice to get another win, particularly when coupled with the Royals loss. Now they need to get it done on the road.
