This may be just one guy's opinion, but if there's even any semblance of truth to it, then there's no excuse for our Sox not to win the division. I find it too hard to believe that the Kansas City Royals are suddenly world beaters capable of pulling of a miracle.

The Royals will collapse.

Agreed. They don't have the firepower that the 2000 Sox had. They aren't going to outscore teams, and I don't think there's anything special about their pitching staff. Mike MacDougal was added to the AS roster only because Mike Sweeney is injured. MacDougal started off the season on fire, but he has struggled with his control of late. He is by no means a reliable closer, and it is difficult to win a division if your bullpen can't hold leads.

I was actually thinking of Keith Foulke as I finished typing the post.

Granted, I would rather have Foulke than Koch, but not by much. IF Koch gets his velocity back, it is a relative toss-up. Giving the ball to Foulke or Koch in the 9th still scares everyone a little, even if they are on. There are only a few true closers in MLB nowadays, where if you happen to have one on your team, the game is shortened to 8 innings.
See:
Gagne, Eric (the nastiest closer I have seen in probably 5 years)
Smoltz, John
Wagner, Billy
Percival, Troy.

The rest are pretty interchangable, IMO.

How can Foulke *not* be one of the most dominant relievers in baseball? His stats (since '99 at least) match up with the likes of Percival, Wagner, and others. Is it because he doesn't throw 99 MPH?

Here are the ARPs of some of baseball's top relievers since 1999:
1999
Wagner: 27.9
Percival: 2.8
Foulke: 35.0
2000
Wagner: -5.5
Percival: -.5
Foulke: 23.3
2001
Wagner: 15.1
Percival: 13.8
Foulke: 20.0
2002
Wagner: 19.3
Percival: 13.1
Foulke: 17.5
2003
Wagner: 12.9
Percival: 6.5
Foulke: 8.7

Look at these stats, and tell me that Foulke isn't dominant.

The Twinkies DID collapse. Their string of consecutive division titles ends at ONE.

KC has alternated between very hot and very cold. It looks like the AL Central could be had for a mere 86 wins this season.

The Twins did not win the division two years running. Cleveland won it two years ago with the Twins second.

That being said a seven game lead is still sizable and the way the Sox play, it could be insurmountable.

I recall that 2001 Twins team collapsing... What did they play? .400 ball the second half?

Ooooh... 1 complete season... They're so good.
