Hogs win nightcap to clinch division title
Becker drives in two runs in 3-0 victory

JOURNAL STAFF REPORT

WILMINGTON, Del.

The Winston-Salem Warthogs had to wait awhile, but it was worth it as they clinched the first half of the Southern Division of the Carolina League with a doubleheader split of the Wilmington Blue Rocks last night.

The Warthogs lost the first game 5-1, but after an hour and 35-minute rain delay, came back to win the second game 3-0. With Salem's 7-3 loss to Myrtle Beach last night, the Warthogs clinched the division because they own the tiebreaker over Salem. Winston-Salem was 7-3 against Salem in the season series.

The Warthogs got just enough runs in the second game to help starter Ryan Wing and relievers Ryan Meaux and Josh Fields.

The Warthogs scored their first run in the fourth off starter Chris Tierney. Jeremy Reed walked with one out and moved to second on a passed ball.

With Brian Becker at bat, the rain started and after the delay, Becker hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Reed for a 1-0 lead. The Warthogs scored two insurance runs in the sixth off reliever Eduardo Villacis.

Outfielder Mike Spidale hit a one-out triple. Reed bunted in front of the plate and catcher Scott Walter threw the ball past first to allow Spidale to score and Reed raced to third on the error. With one out, Becker singled up the middle to make the score 3-0.

Wing pitched three innings with no hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Meaux (1-3) relieved Wing after the delay and went three innings, allowing one hit. Fields pitched the seventh inning for his fifth save.
