Outside of Chicago, the baseball hierarchy (which includes the ESPN BASEBALL media), Sosa is being widely treated as a national joke.
For example, last night on the Tonight Show, Jay Leno started by saying that Martha Stewart claimed, "I'm an innocent as Sammy Sosa!"
His next Shammy joke was: "Sammy Sosa has more endorsments than any other player in baseball. Let's take a look at his newest one." He holds up a bat with a wine cork sticking out of the end of it and says, "This is Sammy's newest product: Wine in a bat." He takes off the cork and pours wine from the bat into his glass, takes a sip and says, "mmmmm...I think I recognize the taste: Pete Rose. (pronounced Rosay).
Maybe Cub fans are giving Sammy a free pass, but his reputation is in shambles on a national basis.
