On a ground ball to the second baseman, Sammy Sosa's bat shattered. The umpires are currently examining the bat, and it's speculated by Chip and Steve that something illegal may have populated the bat.

Yeah I just turned on the game and was going to post this. He was ejected for having an altered bat. Chip Carey is trying to act non chalant like it happens all the time, but I think this is huge! What exactly was wrong with it? Cork? What a story.

Now Stone says he remembers a corked bat incident at Sox Park. Of course, anything goes wrong and they mention the Sox. Possible suspension looming for Shammee?

The look on Sosa and Dusty's face was priceless :) And how about when they started inspecting the bat? Caray tried to say the ump was just trying to find get pieces of the bat that had broken from the bat off the field, and then Stone corrected him :)

Ugh.

You should listen to this spin control from Chip and Stonepony until the Sox game starts.

Exactly, Chip trying to act like it's not a big deal. Stone bringing up names of other guys who have done it (Nettles, Hatcher).

Stone brings up a bat incident that happened "at the old White Sox park". Uh, the Albert Belle incident happened at New Comiskey in 94 didn't it?

This is classic.

Did he mention the former Indians pitcher who crawled through the vents and stole it from the equipment room?

If it's a Cubs broadcast, I'm sure it's about as inaccurate as it could possibly be.

What I love about players getting caught with corked bats is that it doesn't actually help. At least not according to Robert Adair the physics professor who wrote the Physics of Baseball. If anything theres a placebo effect.

HEY HEY HEY
GOODBYE SAMMY!!!!!

Imagine the implications of this:

At very minimum, Sosa is suspended for at least 10 games
Next level is to ban him for 10 games to 2 months
Next level is gone for the season
Next level is banned from baseball
Next Level is a forfeit of ALL CUBS GAMES that included Sammy Sosa

I would imagine that there will be a HUGE investigation of all game tape in which Sammy Sosa broke a bat and the bat is shown

This team has manipulated a generation of fans into thinking Wrigley is the place to be. Notice they never put the camera on that ugly old lady that sits behind the visitor's dugout and has had season tickets since at least the early 80s. Look for her in the 7th inning stretch.

In theory, the cork is supposed to help because it lightens the bat and also has a better "elastic rebound" than wood, meaning it takes more force in, but then shoots out with more.

However, as kermit posted way back when, this has been under considerable scrutiny (some even believe corking a bat has no physical effect whatsoever). I don't know about that, but usually you can be pretty sure he's looking at about a 10-game suspension... What did Belle get?

None. I think at some point they believed it added something but they can make completely legal bats thats act like corked bats. In my opinion this is the best part, he's not even doing something that should help him, he's just doing something that will get him suspended.

Corking the bat actually lowers the elasticity of the bat and Belle was suspended seven games.

George, I think the Moron will have a different spin on this.

For one, since Sham-ME isn't producing this year, he's fair game for Jay to stomp all over him safely, especially with Jay's favorite team in 1st place still.

Jay will hem and haw and solemnly state that Sham-ME has tained a surefire Hall of Fame career with this stunt.

BUT, then Jay will play the pity card about Sham-ME being beaned in the noggin a few weeks ago and then being sidelined with a bad toenail, and how -- c'mon, he's the Greatest Slugger in All of Baseball -- could you really BLAME Sham-ME for trying to do anything he can to help out his team?

I'm pretty sure that's how he'll play it. Watch especially for Jay to say, if the Flubs come back and win this game, how it's just a minor diversion in their otherwise steamrolling through the NL Central.

Found this on Baseball Primer's discussion board. Hilarious:

SAMMY SOSA IS A FRAUD WHO POOPS HIS PANTS

by Jay Mariotti

Thau shalt not cheat. That's the first thing they taught you in little league. Hustle, play hard, worry about winning if it makes you play better, just have fun if it doesn't. Have fun, play within the rules, shake the other team's hand after the game, and we'll go for a tasty freeze afterward.

But don't cheat.

I don't know if they have little league down in the Dominican Republic, but Sammy Sosa must have missed that day of class.

Sammy was a hero to so many.

He was a hero to Edna Terwilliger, who has faithfully attended every home game since 1923 in spite of her blindness and the Cubs' listlessness.

He was a hero to Roberto Sanchez, a native of San Pedro de Macoris, who works the overtime shift at the meat packing plant just so he'll have the extra cash to come to come see his countryman in a game or two over the weekend.

He was a hero to my son, Jay Jr.

He'll be a hero no more. Sammy Sosa is a fraud and all of his accomplishments are forever tainted. The 500 home runs, the smile on his Hall of Fame plaque, the race against McGwire during that magical summer of 1998.

Tainted. Forever.

Just when it looked like everything was coming together for one glorious season, with Dusty in the dugout and Prior on the mound and the Yankees coming to town for the first time in seventy years. Just when it looked like it was safe, for the first time in a long time, to believe in this franchise. Just as the calender had turned to June - Cubs fans dug in, waited for their pitch -

And took a collective beanball to their head.

Sammy Sosa is a fraud who poops his pants.

There is no joy in Wrigleyville today.

Well after reading the article, I think that the verdict on whether cork helps is, it depends. If you remove enough weight to counter the decrease in efficiency, it will go farther. So if you put a lot of cork in there it helps, how much, is a totally different question.

Okay, here is the theory at least:

There are two reasons a corked bat should increase the kinetic energy transferred from bat to ball. First of all the lighter the bat, presumably the greater the bat speed, and the KE of the bat is, therefore increased as the square of the velocity difference. (This is why lighter bats are used in the first place nowadays. The kinetic energy formula is KE = 0.5mv^2. If you double the mass of the bat you double the KE, but if you double the velocity, you quadruple the KE.) So you should by lightening the bat with a little cork get a slight increase in velocity. This is the lesser of the two effects.

Second, there is a greater transfer of momentum of the ball when there is more bounce. What you are doing here is increasing the impulse time, the time in which the bat and ball are in contact. This leads to a greater change in momentum. The equation for this is Ft = <delta>(mv), that it the force of impact times the time of contact equals the change in momentum. For a given force of contact between bat and ball, if you increase the time of contact, the ball comes off the bat harder, i.e. a greater change in momentum.

About 15-20 years ago players were loading their bats with superballs to achieve this effect.

Okay, first off, he's changed his story. He told a Cubs spokesperson during the game that the bat was for exhibitions. Then he figured out that there are no exhibitions around June 3rd on the calendar, so he went to the ridiculous "I use in BP to make my freinds happy" story. I am the only one who noticed this?

Second, for those of you who listen to Tony Bruno, Sammy actually said "keep it continue" during the ESPN interview. Hilarious!

Well before he came back from his injury I remember that Sammy was talking to the Media he was singing his words and he sounded drunk or high (Highlighted on Memorial Day Me and Z show on 670). Maybe he was too drunk or high today to figure out that his bat was corked, but more likely he knew full well that it was corked. Tonight, he used it and he damn well KNEW he was using it. What is a corked bat doing in the dugout during the game anyway? Take it out after BP if that's what you use it for. My new favorite quote is from some guy from Outside the Lines on ESPN. He said

That is the best way to put it. If there is a corked bat you make sure that you know its corked so you dont "accidentally" grab it. I bet he knew for certain he was using that bat, he just didn't think it would break like that.

MLB seized all of his bats. I'm certain that they'll not find cork in any of the rest of them, and all the Sammy apologists will say this proves it was an "innocent, mental mistake" as Sammy is right now characterizing it on SportsCenter.

My read is that he has one corked bat in the dugout, to use in RBI situations like the one tonight. I'd be amazed if he had several.

Hey TornLabrum. I'm impressed by your physics lesson. Sammy should have used http://www.flex-a-chart.com/images/cork_tan.jpg so that the broken bat would have covered itself up.

Ahhh! I'm having flashbacks to 1992, Minooka High! Only Hal was teaching me electron configurations in chemistry class at the time (which has paid dividends, I might add).

Nice to hear another of your lectures again. you just don't hear this kind of analysis from booby valentine or gammons.

You guys crack me up... Great thread. The graphics are priceless...

I happened to be channel surfing as I sat down to dinner and flipped past the flubbies game. The score at that moment was 1-0 flubbies, but I kept going. My roommate (flubs fan) comes out of his room 30 minutes later to tell me about the cork incident. He hates Sosa, so he thought it was funny, but later he was worried about the implications for the team and wasn't so lighthearted.

I learned they took the run off the board by reading this thread when it only had 25 posts or so. Makes me wish I hadn't kept surfing when I did. I would have loved to see that...

Sure to top the Country Charts very soon: "Sham-Me's Song" by Sham-Me Sosa!

:shammy
Well…

There was a runner on third and I’m the guy
Who’s supposed to come thru and get the RBI
So I grabbed my lucky bat and what do you know
I took a poor swing and that damn thing broke

I drove in the run and everything was good
Till the umpires started inspecting the wood
They found something and I opened my eyes
Little did I know what was inside

I held in my breath and tried to hide
How would I know that they would find
A little bit of something inside my bat
And so I say, “How’d it get inside that?”

So, a few minutes later I’m ejected
I enter the dugout feeling all rejected
I knew my time was coming, ooo-ee!
Will the people stop lovin’ Sham-Me?

And, all through that time in the back, I couldn’t help but thinkin’

Well, the way a baby gets delivered by a stork
And, the way a knife goes with a fork
And the way that Mindy went with Mork
Sham-Me goes nowhere without his bat that’s corked

Well, I knew that soon the game would be endin’
Where’s Jason Grimsley when you really need ‘im?

The game is over and my team wins (so what?)
Yet I’m under fire like I committed a sin
A post-game interview, this was no fun
Don’t you all know I’m the man who hit 66 home run?

All that remains is the fact is
“I use that bat for batting practice”
“It was a mistake,” I didn’t want no stir
Oh, can’t you see that I’m sorry, sir?

So, again, I said to myself

Well, the way a baby gets delivered by a stork
And, the way a knife goes with a fork
And the way that Mindy went with Mork
Sham-Me goes nowhere without his bat that’s corked

But, I stood up and took it like a man - I said
After all I do it all for the fans - and I was hit in the head
As long as I still get in the Hall of Fame
With no asterisk placed beside my name

Remember, every single one of you out there, baseball is my life
Why, I haven't swung a corked object like this since last I saw my wife

But, all my Chicago friends will take care of this
Then, it’s back to hitting zingers at the park of piss
It’ll all blow over since I did and I readily admitted
Soon enough, the media will chastise some White Sox idiot

I just love the Chicago media… They make everybody love the Cubs!

So, I knew about the bat, but who really cares?
Just as long as I continue to hop and hit homers
And thru it all I will always be smiling
As long as I don’t get questioned by Rick Reilly

So, that’s my tale of a certain situation
The story that rocked the entire nation
In a couple of days, I’ll have sanctity
‘Cause everybody loves ol’ Sham-Me!

They just can’t help it!

Well, the way a baby gets delivered by a stork
And, the way a knife goes with a fork
And the way that Mindy went with Mork
Sham-Me goes nowhere without his bat that’s corked

One more time!

Well, the way a baby gets delivered by a stork
And, the way a knife goes with a fork
And the way that Mindy went with Mork
Sham-Me goes nowhere without his bat that’s corked!

I'm not sure that I buy the argument that corked bats don't help. I understand that you might not be able to hit the ball as far, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't have other positive effects. It seems to me that, if you can make one bat with certain dimensions lighter than another bat with the same dimensions, you will be able to swing the lighter bat faster. Thus, you could make a lighter bat with a bigger barrel, and the bigger barrel should give you a larger "sweet spot" giving you more margin for error. This would mean that a player would be less likely to "mis-hit" balls, ie "get under it" or "on top of it," which would obviously lead to more line drives and thus more hits and homers. So, in other words, despite giving up force on the ball, you would have the bat control of a smaller bat, with the ability to hit the ball squarely of a larger one.

I wasn't responding to your question, only your misinformed quip at the end of your post, calling me an apologist. If they find more bats (which, if they do, they'll probably cover it up) it's simply further proof that he's spinning a story (though I doubt he's smart enough to do as such). And no, I would not spin a defense for using an illegal bat. You've got the wrong poster for that...

His argument was that umpires weren't doing anything about illegal spitballers, so hitters felt justified in corking their bats.

several points on this

1. sammy the great team player, talked to the media before he even talked to his team or his manager

2. Prior, Baker and the cub media rep seemed very upset with all the sammy ?'s except sammy seemed very calm when questioned about it.

3. He is a liar.

A. He supposedly has 70 bats of which only one was corked. Commonsense shows that it would be much easier to distinquish from the other bats. If he had several corked bats than it would be much easier to mistake which is which

B. Lets say for argment sake he has used this cork bat for BP the last 2 years. Thats over 320 games, thus he should be very familiar with its look and feel. He supposedly has been able to distinquish all those other times, why just this once he didn't.

C. If he is such an upstanding guy why in the heck was that bat anywhere near his other bats. It should be seperated from all the rest

In the ST this morning, Rick Telander writes something very interesting in the midst of a pretty critical article on Corky..

"Is it worth noting that after returning from his recent toe injury, Sosa struck out eight times in two games, then dumped his blond bat and began using a black bat like this busted one?

Is it worth noting that he fanned five times Saturday against the Houston Astros, switched to a black bat late in the game, then singled home the winning run in the 16th inning?"

If true, it REALLY makes him look bad. Especially if there's any evidence that the "C" was on Sat/Sun's bats.

I haven't had time to read all the posts, but I wanted to put my opinion in.

There is plenty of phoniness going on here.

Sammy deserves his day in court, but he hasn't helped his case so far.

I am tired of the spin doctors on TV. No one in either broadcast booth has any credibility with me right now. The mute button is a great invention.

If baseball was really interested in its rules, it would enforce them. If there were random inspections of bats, this problem might not be a problem.

The worse part of last night was that the Cubs won.

Very interesting. I think this is a big piece of evidence. That was my thought almost immediately, that he was trying to get out of his slump by using the corked bat. Note the RBI situations in all of those examples and last night when it broke. This guy is a fraud and anyone who believes his "excuse" is a moron.

Regardless, he used an illegal bat in a game. Period. IT'S AGAINST THE RULES. Whether or not this has happened before without him getting caught remains to be seen. I'll be surprised if there are other corked bats. I think he knew dang well which one he was using.

I've been reading in this thread that there are people, including

1. We absolutely NEED to get a frequent "cor-ky" chant going for all crosstown games. I was going to sugest a "cheater" chant, but corky is better. Thanks, Cheeses. Someone start a reminder thread when the crosstown games begin.

2. Sosa's story is completely contrived and unbelievable. Assume that he only used the corked bat one time. What are the chances that the bat happens to break down the barrel in that very at bat? Such a break happens, what, once every 300 ABs or something? It's significantly more likely that he used it 300 times and it finally broke.

3. Why does Sosa assume that it's okay to use a corked bat in a HR hitting contest? He's still cheating the players who aren't using corked bats. Would he agree to allow the competition to use aluminum bats in a HR hitting contest or the AL pitchers to use sandpaper in the All-Star Game? After all, they're just exhibitions.

4. For those who think corked bats are an okay response to a spitballer, I seem to recall someone once telling me that TWO WRONGS DON'T MAKE A RIGHT (but three "rights" do make a "left").

5. Telander is all over this. He was on TV last night ripping Sosa a new one.

I'm telling you, this guy is toast. Right now, every sports news organization is examining their footage of every single one of Sosa's at-bats and all their pre- and post-game coverage of his movements in the clubhouse and on the field. THEY ARE LOOKING FOR THAT BAT!

If the corked bat shows up even one time in a previous at-bat (or even in the on-deck circle or dugout), he is toast. If the bat NEVER shows up anywhere in pre- or post-game footage, he's toast, too. His oh-so-convenient excuse for why he got caught won't hold water. That will be the end of The Sammy Myth. If any of his other bats are corked too, he's toast even quicker.

This isn't over, not by a long shot. Sosa has boxed himself into a corner, and the national media is coming to get him. His buddies in Chicago's media circles cannot protect him any longer.

What really are the odds of:

1. Sham-ME using a corked bat only once in his career

AND

2. Having that bat shatter during that one at-bat

AND

3. Having that bat shatter in such a way that the cork was visible?

AND

4. Having an opposing player notice the cork and point this out to the umpires?

Things that make you go "Hmmmm."

I don't see any problem with the league getting FULL cooperation from everyone (including the Cubune) on this matter. Their own press credentials are at stake for refusing to cooperate.

I'm at a total losss to understand all the glee from White Sox fans.I mean i hate the cubs as much as the next guy but all i see is misery in the near future for us.The White Sox are, right now,the worst team in the AL.The park will be empty all year as the Sox muddle thru a horrible season. We may lose some of our best players thru trades bu y the morn GM we have.If the Sox weren't standing right at the edge looking down into the abyss then i might be able to enjoy this sosa thing some.Right now all i see i bad sh#t ahead.

I had just gotten home from work and flpped on the tube. All of a sudden Fox breaks in with a breaking news segment. I'm thinking what blew up now. Then I find out Sammy had a corked bat! It was priceless, I laughed for five whole minutes. :)

*****! This one has WSI's "Post of the Year" written all over it. In fact, it is early favorite for "WSI Post of the Century" and "WSI Post of the Millennium", too!

Harwar, this is what we like to call a "silver lining." The Sox aren't going anywhere this year, so I'll take whatever I can.

Yeah, similar posts, you're right. But really, I just thought of all these "convergences" having to happen for Sham-ME* to get caught, so I took it a bit further.

Ditto.

WSI has more than enough mournful angry threads for any frustrated Sox Fan to vent their spleen and bleed their vitals over our franchise's hopeless condition. This thread is for fun. It might be the only one we Sox Fans have all season.

Yep, that's exactly it.

Maybe we can get Konehead some of those bats. If it helps, great. If it shatters and he gets suspended, who cares?

I'd rather be reading about a great Sox season.

But Shammy's corky exploits will do in a pinch. :D:

Agreed. Don't forget Daubach and Valentin as well.

They said on the radio this morning that for a 1:20 game at Wrigley, the Cubs have BP from 11:10-11:50. The gates open 1 1/2 hours before the game starts which would be 11:50. So therefore when the fans enter the Cubs are just finishing with BP. So Sosa uses a corked bat to put on a show for the fans that arent there yet. They also stuck up for Sosa on SportsCenter saying that the velocity of a corked bat is only 1% greater meaning a 400 foot HR would only go 404 feet with a corked bat.

Yeah, but that increased bat speed could be the difference between dropping in the left field bleachers or the ctr fielder's mitt...

I think that's probably the only thing that matters...public perception. It'd be great if he got booed at a home game today.

Both Telander and the Score were saying that it is clear that Sosa used the now infamous black bat during the 16 inning game against the Astros. He struck out his first four ABs with a "blonde" colored bat and then switched to a black one (assuming the corked one since Sammy has stated that it was the only black one he had). This bat also was used in the game winning hit that Sosa got. What precedent is there for something like this? If they find out that Sosa did indeed use that bat to beat the Astros, can the Cubs get a win taken away from them? One thing I do know, Sosa is toast after this.

Sosa cork= medicine for ailing Sox fans

I doubt it. The manager would have had to protest, or the umpire would have had to catch the fact that it was corked during the game itself.

Could have a MAJOR impact on the length and severity of the eventual punishment for Sham-me, though. Maybe they won't take away previous victories or homers, but MLB may make a statement with their decision. 15-game suspension?

it's not as a sox fan that i relish sosa's humiliation, but as a baseball fan. here's a "man" who's been cheating all these years with steroids and amphetamines and apparently with corked bat and he finally gets part of what's coming to him.

Everyone in the world has this image of sosa as a great guy, with his charity work and all that other bs. however he is truly the kind of guy who shows pitchers up in the worst way after every steroid, speed, wind, and cork-aided home run. the kind of guy who throws a temper tantrum when his manager questions his complete lack of effort on defense. the kind of guy who will most likely end up striking out more than reggie jackson. the kind of guy who is absolutely not a team player. the kind of guy who BEATS HIS WIFE WITH A GLASS BOTTLE. the kind of guy who charges an appearance fee at a dedication ceremony honoring him in his "beloved" native land. the kind of guy who will not give money to help his countrymen despite an explicit promise to do so.

sammy sosa is a product of this era of baseball, where homeruns are worshipped over execution and fielding. and he is being lauded upon hitting his 500th homerun as one of the greatest ever. well i've got news for the baseball world. if rafael palmeiro can hit 500 homeruns, 500 don't mean $#!+ compared to what i once did. and 500 homeruns with the help of steroids, speed, coke, little league dimensions and cork mean about as much as 150 real homeruns. cecil fielder might have been morbidly obese, but at least he played in a real ballpark...and we can be reasonably sure he didn't juice.

cecil fielder is a better player than sammy.

Plus, I think mine was better. It was an original!

Doesn't corking make the bat much lighter?

Then how the hell didn't Sammy notice it if he "accidently" picked it up.

I'm shocked. You aren't suggesting Shammy might be lying, are you?

BTW, the Flubbies are going to announce before tonight's game the results of x-rays done on all of Sosa's other bats.

Gee, I can't imagine how that one is going to turn out!
