HUGGINS, HONEL TOPS FOR THE WEEK
May 8, 2003

Mike Huggins of the Frederick Keys has been named Carolina League Batter of the Week for the Week Ending May 7, and Winston Salem's Kris Honel has been named Pitcher of the Week.

Huggins belted a two-run double with two outs in the top of the ninth to force extra frames in the Keys 9-8 victory over Potomac May 4. Huggins reached base safely by hit or walk in 20 consecutive games April 19-May 7 (28-69, 5 2B, 2 HR, 16 RBI), driving in runs in six consecutive games May 3-7

The right-handed Honel struck out a season-high 12 batters in his first career complete game, beating Lynchburg, 7-1, in the first game of a doubleheader May 6. Honel, who was selected 16th overall in the 2001 draft, yielded one run, allowed two hits and issued three walks over seven strong innings to earn his second straight win. The 20-year-old Illinois native did not surrendered a hit after the second inning and fanned six straight batters between the second and fourth, including the side in the third frame.

GREAT! Another young arm to rush up to the bigs. But optimistically it's great to have another young arm to keep tabs on and hope for success. Keep it up Kris!
