Lee slumping: One of the key members of the White Sox offensive attack has not been producing of late. Carlos Lee, who ranked among the league leaders in several offensive categories at the All-Star break, has been ice cold in the second-half of the season.
"(Hitting coach) Gary Ward was worked with Carlos to rectify the situation at the plate," Manuel said. "I am not that worried. He is a proven hitter at this level. I feel he will break out and bring his average back up to where it belongs."

Over his last 11 games, the White Sox left fielder is hitting .098 (4-for-41) and .206 (26-for-126) since the break.

Clayton update: Shortstop Royce Clayton, who missed Thursday's game with soreness in his lower back, was absent from Manuel's lineup for the second consecutive day. While Clayton did not see any action during the game, the AL's top fielding shortstop did participate in fielding drills and batting practice prior to Friday's game.

"He probably could have played today," Manuel said. "I am going to give him a day to be sure and give him an extra day of rest for his back."

On the farm: Left-hander Corwin Malone made his Class AA Birmingham debut last night, allowing just one run on one hit over 6 2/3 innings in the Barons 11-4 win vs. West Tennessee. Malone, 21, gave up a second-inning infield single, walked six and struck out 12. The 6-3, 200-pounder has gone 12-5 with a 1.91 ERA and 169 strikeouts in 23 combined starts between Birmingham, Class A Kannapolis and Class A Winston-Salem. Malone has allowed just 109 hits.

Back to Arizona: Six members of the White Sox organization will play in the 2001 Arizona Fall League: right-handed pitchers Matt Guerrier and Mitch Wylie; catcher Miguel Olivo; shortstop Tim Hummel; and outfielders Joe Borchard and Mario Valenzuela are scheduled to play for the Mesa Solar Sox.

Game notes: The White Sox have turned 14 double plays in their last eight games at Comiskey Park ... the ChiSox have dropped to .500 for the 14th time this season ... Jose Valentin has hit safely in eight of his last 11 games ... Oakland has won 13 of their last 14 series openers ... the A's improved to 22-10 vs. teams from the AL Central ... Eric Chavez extended his hitting streak to 12 games ... Jermaine Dye has 23 RBIs in 22 games with Oakland ... with three walks combined tonight, Jeremy and Jason Giambi have 134 on the season, ranking third all-time for brothers as teammates.
