I'm a little surprised as to how this came about. They let him create a media circus that backed them into extending his contract. And it might not be a good idea. Now they can't work him hard this year because they already owe him 17.5 million next year. With no extension they could have safely given him a heavier workload and checked to see how his arm responded.

Which is probably exactly what Pedro and his agent were expecting, which is why they made a big deal about demaning an extension.
