Way to go with the E, Graff! However, is it just me or does the defense seem to be playing fairly well overall this spring?

Rooney and Farmer said that he had to back up to get the ball and threw it very flat footed.

Defensively, I'm much more comfortable with Graffanino than anyone on this team except Crede at third.

I understand that this is only spring training, but fielding looks to continue as the Achilles' heel of the White Sox. This, more than injuries, Frank's attitude, Jimenez's work ethic, Danny Wright's elbow, JM's tinkering, or the Twins' "luck" is the biggest barrier between the White Sox and October games.

Fielding and depth are the reasons that a team 9th in runs scored and decimated by injuries won the AL Central last year. Unless the Sox can address the fielding this year, I would bet that they will be watching the playoffs from home in 2003.

Here's to a competitive AL Central in 2003! :gulp:

Jose Valentin walks. Miles at 2nd, Valentin at 1st.
Miles advances to 3rd on another wild pitch. Valentin to 2nd
Frank Thomas singles to left/center. Miles scores, Valentin to 3rd! 3-2 Sox!
Magglio Ordonez flies out to center. Sac Fly as Valentin scores. 10th RBI of the Spring for Maggs! Sox lead, 4-2
Paul Konerko walks??? (I spaced out)
Brian Daubach flies out to center field.

Strange, I had the opposite impression. While I know errors themselves are not the whole story, I don't recall a game this spring where they made more than one error (except that one nightmare where Jimenez made two or three).

I could be wrong though...

Two questions...

Why is Frank playing at first the last two games?

Why pitch Colon against an American league team? I thought they were pitching him against national league batting uless I'm confusing him for someone else. They did that with Foulke a few years ago.

czalgosz
03-11-2003, 03:10 PM
The American League is pretty familiar with Colon already...

Wasn't Foulke working on a splitter or something when they did that?

Willie Bloomquist strikes out, ball gets away from Paul, throws him out at first.

Just one game so far this spring for the Sox with multiple errors, (not including today), but here are the stats I'm talking about (thru Monday 3/10):

Team/Errors/Games

Sox/10/13

Twins/3/14

is it me or is daubach having a rough spring?

as for the pitching against only one league, JM did that to Buehrle last year where he only pitched against NL teams. I can see the arguments for both, but colon pitched for cleveland, so he's not going to be a surprise for the rest of the AL.

czalgosz
03-11-2003, 03:41 PM
Bah. Bah, I say. Errors are a terrible indicator of defensive prowess. The Twins are a very good defensive ballclub, but not because they don't make many errors. Mainly, they know how to play the unique challenge of their park.

But having bad defense isn't necessarily a death sentence - the A's had arguably worse defense than the Sox did last year. Of course, it helped to have great pitching.

Fgrtuhdsbanhlkds brought up a good point. Our "D" needs to step it up.....and yes, the Twins know how to play on the spongy turf of theirs.......

I'd put Graffinino playing either short or third behind only Thomas when it comes to the team's worst defenders.

D'OH! Someone please hire us a baserunning coach!!! (IIRC, Thomas and Konerko also had baserunning gaffes since the beginning of ST)

I can really get used to our pitchers having 1-2-3 innings!!! :)

If the division race is going to be as close as people expect, base running mistakes and defensive gaffs could be a major factor.
