Read this tidbit in a BP article.

Since 1972, the Sox have played below 500 ball from April to end of August (.493%). In the month of Sept they have played .530 ball. I have no clue what this could mean other then we play well when the team is out of the race.

Although I don't have any definate proof, it seems we play our worst games when the crowds at Comiskey are larger then normal. Pressure ???

IIRC, we've played well against the Cubs in The Cell... and those are by far the biggest crowds of the year...

September, eh? Maybe our Sox play well against the other teams late season call-ups.

In my defense , it was the lowly cubs.
When we were chasing the A's and then later the tribe it seemed we played badly during a crucial series when it was played on the weekends when attendance is usually higher.

With the exception of 2000, that seems to be the M.O. on this bunch thus far...and as far as the various inter-league series against the Grubs go, it's not like we've exactly eradicated them--aren't we 1+ game over .500 against those vermin?

I believe we are 16-14 against the Cubs since the start of interleague play. Don't know how it breaks down in the respective ballparks but I'll bet somebody here does.

Dan Helpingstine in his book brought out a remarkable stat on pages 211-212. He asked how many seasons were the Sox "in contention" after September 1st in the last 30+ years (since 1967)

The answer is almost never (other then the division winning seasons in 1983, 1993 and 2000)

18 times the Sox were under .500 on September 1 (68, 69, 70, 71, 73, 74, 75, 76, 78, 79, 80, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 95, 97)

18 times the Sox were 10 or more games out on September 1 ( 68, 69, 70,71, 73, 74, 75, 76, 78, 79, 80, 86, 87, 88, 89, 92, 95)

Only in the seasons of 67, 72, 77, 81, and 97 were the Sox five games or less out of 1st place on September 1st.

He uses this information as part of his reasoning about why fan apathy has almost destroyed the Sox franchise.

One can also use it as an argument that the Sox traditionally have played better later on in the season because the records show for three quarters of the last 35+ seasons the Sox have been out of the race because of poor play in April through July.

And dont forget-for many years, we have been mired in a "weak division" with most games in the division at the end.

The book is called "Through Hope & Despair" and at one time was being sold through this site.

You can contact Dan yourself here at WSI, he's a member with Dan H. as his site name. You can probably e-mail him to find out how to get his book.

HITMEN - If you would like a copy, and you e-mail me directly (wallynn@aol.com), I will pay the shipping costs. Just make sure to include your address, and if you want iy autographed, tell me who to sign it to.

Just to give me a little information about myself, I have been a reporter which included six years of covering high school basketball and football here in Northwest Indiana. I had a short story published in a book entitled Murder Is My Business which came out in 1995. I have also had articles published on the JFK assassination.

My book is little known partly because I have had a hard time getting publicity from the Chicago media. George Bova has been kind enough to publicize it here at WSI along with publishing occasional columns of mine. Still, it has sold fairly well even with me not being a well known media name. And I had a great time writing the book.

If anyone at WSI contacts me directly, I will take care of shipping costs. Meanwhile, I thank anyone who has purchased the book already.

Hey, Dan. I just wanted to let you know that I bought your book last fall. I really enjoyed it. I'm 16 and I've only been a Sox fan four about 3 years so I enjoyed finding out about the things that have happened to the Sox in the past.

I also read the book and enjoyed it. It is recommended reading for Sox fans. It was nice to read a book from a Sox fan's perspective.
