Sox notes: Lineup tinkering

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Manager Jerry Manuel says he will do a little more tinkering with the lineup early in the season, giving everyone a chance to get comfortable and settle into a rhythm.

(Lyrics are in place of the song "The Guitar Man" by Bread)

The Tinker Man

Who draws the lineup card by odds,
Baby it's the tinker man.
Who's gonna change game flow, you know
Baby it's the tinker man,

He can make you mad, he can make you cry
He will bring you down, then he'll get you high
Somethin' keeps him goin', innings and innings a day
To find another piece to play.

Night after night who gives you frights,
Baby it's the tinker man
Who's on the bench, to make you flinch
Baby itís the tinker man

When he goes to the mound, and youíre in such disgrace,
And you know you could do better in his place
Somethin' keeps him shiftin' pitchers and hitters away
Searchin' the right combo to play.

Then he makes a judgment that you know that heíll regret
He fidgets and fiddles until the ship comes home a wreck
Then you find yourself a bottle and some churros to call your own
And take them home.

He can make you laugh, he can make you sigh
He will take you down, then he'll make you cry
Somethin' keeps him movin', but no one seems to know
What it is that makes him go.

Then the lights begin to flicker and the crowd is getting thin
He heads into the locker room not really knowing where heís been
He never seems to notice he's just got to go find
Another player to play to ease his mind.

:)

So the White Sox official site used the term "tinkering" to describe what JM does, I guess they must read WSI, too. Pretty cool!

Actually they had a pretty decent start last season.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit. I also read somewhere that the team had a jersey made up for Rowand with "Crash" on the back. Last year the guys on the team nick-named him "RoboCop".

"Crash" was started here...

That's an interesting topic, irish. You're correct, Manuel went with virtually the exact same lineup the entire first month of 2002:

CF Lofton
2B Durham
DH Thomas
RF Ordonez
1B Konerko
3B Valentin
LF Lee
C Alomar/Johnson
SS Clayton

So by the end of April, where were the Sox? Answer: first-place with the #1 rated offense in the entire American League.

So how does Manuel respond to this situation?

Only an idiot and Jerry Manuel would try to improve on the #1 offense. It's as if he thought #0 was still ahead of us, LOL!

In retrospect, I would point to this precise moment as when I jumped off the "I support Jerry" bandwagon. The last bit of whatever "genius" label I was willing to ascribe to him for the 2000 season was finally eliminated early in May of 2002.

The tinkering started with Manuel dropping Durham to #7, and didn't really stop until late-July when the Sox were all but officially out of it.

What did Crash Davis say in Bull Durham? "Never screw with a winning streak."

:gulp:

Well, what lineup spots would you write in ink for this season?

I would put Konerko in the 5 hole and leave him there.

I started to say Thomas in #3, and Ordonez in #4, but actually it might make sense to swap those two.

Olivo/Alomar #9, almost definitely.

Other than that, I really don't know.

Close, but no cigar. You must have been watching the ESPNClassic version.
