As I started my car for the ride home last nite, I heard a commercial last nite that made my Blood Pressure Rise. "Coming up Tonite on ABC -7 with Mark Giancreco from Mesa AZ, Dusty Baker has one of the youngest Rookies ever in Training Camp. His 4 yr old son Darren. We'll have that special update. Bulls play tonite, and all the college basketball hilites...Tonite at 10 !!!!

Didn't Giangreco say he was going to run the Sox out of town? It was a couple of years ago.

I think you're giving Giangreco to much credit here Hangar. That would require too much actual journalism work.

Oh man, you guys missed Dan Roan (WGN) and his 10-minute report on Dusty's kid. I had the sound down, but all I saw was "cute" shots of little Darren running around in his Baby Bears uniform. I was just like, "***?"

I think Channel 5 (Mike Adamle) featured plenty of li'l Darren, too, during the 10:00 news.

I love hard-hitting journalism.

I would be willing to bet that I'm getting better coverage of the Sox here in Minneapolis than those of you in Chicago.

And on top of this....Dan Roan and WGN-9 did a piece on little Darren Freakin Baker too?? Absolutely Ridiculous.

Hey Lip....heres another of the long list of reasons why I hate the Cubs and the Chicago Cub Loving Media.

Guys, I'm certainly not a TV Guy--never have been, never will be-BUT I think I can tell you why all the Chicago TV Outlets are in Mesa right now rather that Tuscon. They are on the Ron Santo watch to see if he gets in the HOF Wed or not. I am guessing you'll then see most head back to Tuscon. When Pudge Fisk was elected a few years ago,the TV outlets stayed with him as well, the difference was he held a news conference here in Chicago after his election. The Sox got plenty of coverage when Big Frank went off last Friday. Now that he has stopped(for the 10th time at least)talking to reporters, the Sox will get plenty of coverage once the Santo HOF story is done.Again, this is just a theory on my part. A week from this Saturday(March 8)when the Sox face the Cubs--that is when I'll be doing a Radio show from Arizona on 1000. A chance to do something with BOTH teams that day. LES GROBSTEIN

I really think Baker could fart and they would turn it into a half hour special.
Someone confronted Mark G. a year or two ago(I think it was North on the Score) and asked why he covered the Cubs so much at Spring Training. The reply was that at the beginning of the year they have to pick who they think have a better chance that year and put their resources into that. You decide!

Even one day night last week, CLTV(CubLandTV) said they were going to feature the Sox that night on SportsPage. I swear they talked more about the cubs that night then anything else.

i dont know Grob. Im going to disagree with you. the Santo HOF thing is just an excuse for the media to hang out there. Next, it will be the Darren Baker Watch. then the Hee Sop plays agianst minor leaguers in spring Reports....etc etc.....

Im curious as to what you'll actually be reporting on both teams though.....

Les, where did you hear that Frank has stopped talking to reporters again?

IMO, it's a GOOD thing, but I'm just curious if this is official or not...

Hey Grobber...Ive got a Great Idea for you. When you do your show....HAVE THIS as a Topic for your show. Ask the Question why the Cubs get more Media Coverage than the Sox, and do they Deserve it. Feel free to Look UP all my posts where Ive written down how many more Stories the Cubs have over the Sox (Cub Fluff vs Hard actual News) I think youd be surprised with the results.....
just an idea

I've heard this from several sources. And I couldn't agree more - it is a good thing because when he talks, he makes problems for himself (and the team).

The Santo HOF story is never done. Next will be the Santo-shoots-himself-in-the-head-after-missing-the-HOF story. They're already laying the groundwork. Otherwise, we'll get the isn't-it-great-that-Santo-got-enshrined-because-he's-only-got-one-leg story. (I guess John Kruk should make the Hall also.)

As far as Baker's kid goes, I'll always think of him as the kid who almost got himself naturally deselected last year. Not exactly the "cute" angle their shooting for. It's too bad than none of the Sox players / coaches have any cute kids.

I guess that's my number one complaint with Chicago sports media: terrible lack of originality. Like lemmings, most outlets run the same damn stories over and over again.

Hanger 18 and others:

Here's an idea for you. Why don't you call the TV stations, ask to speak with the SPORTS PRODUCER, (they are the ones who actually line out and set up the show, NOT the anchors!) and ask THEM why they aren't talking about the Sox.

That's right...guys like Giangreco, Rohn etc have very little to say about what is covered and the order in which it is shown, that's the way things are at union stations.

Then you can post here what they said. I understand your frustration but there's nothing anybody can do about it at WSI. You need to speak with those who can.

Im going to do just that this afternoon as time permits. My Burning Question....To the Media is:

WHY ARE THE CUBS A MUCH MORE IMPORTANT STORY?
WHY ARE WE BEING BURNED OUT WITH Rehashed and Otherwise
Worthless Stories? WHY? Why does a Story about the Meteoric Rise of 3 young pitchers in the Sox Minor System and how it could affect the makeup of the Bullpen get superseded by a 4 yr old kid who is shown sliding around the infield of the Cubs Camp ???

Lip, I find that a little hard to swallow. Giangreco has been a sports anchor in Chicago for close to 20 years if I'm not mistaken. I can't believe that he doesn't have more clout than that of what is broadcast in his segment.

Yesterday Dan McNeil was questioning the ability and attention to craft of Chicago's television sports anchors. He was right on in his assessment, although he gave kudos to Cory McPherrin, who is the smarmiest of them all!

I am guessing that Giangreco is the highest paid of this miserable lot.

There isn't one that brings fresh information to their segments. You would think with all the time on their hands, they could break a story once in a while.

Look who we’re dealing with; Giangreco, Roan, McPherrin, Brad Palmer, Schanowski. Not much from which to choose. Maybe it's what they are required to do; read scores, run highlights and show an occasional sports blooper.

I've never been in a newsroom, but I find it unfathomable that these talking heads don’t have some "creative" input into their reports and presentations.

just spoke to Pete Bordwell, who says hes the Sports Editor at Channel 7. I told him who I was and that weve had the fiery topic of News Media Bias on our minds here. I told him how does a story about some stupid kid who isnt even a CUB, overtake anything that could be written about the White Sox. Well, the answer was quite Simple. He said first off, that he is a big Sox Fan, he remembered the 59 sirens and such. But he said quite frankly, the "cubs are the more popular team" here, and that they had to go with whats more interesting. I thought that peculiar. I told him that he doensnt realize it, but the more the Media "popularizes" the Cubs, the more popular they become. He somewhat agreed, but said he hoped they won more so that he could put more of their stories on the air. Not sure If I agree with that theory, but hey, he could be telling the truth. There might be a mandate that says, hey, all cubs all the time. He did joke about how the late Tim Weigel was a huge Sox Fan and hated the cubs. Heres to Timmy, Cheers.

Well, another thing that bothers me is that the stations only send one reporter down to Arizona. When they have one reporter there they switch teams every couple of days. It would be a lot easier to just send one reporter for each team, and maybe bump a college basketball highlight off the 10PM sports.

Giangreco scares me too much especially one his weekly segments with Afternoon Thunder. The guy puts to much emphasis on sports.

The best Chicago sports caster lost his life last eyar and that is Darrien Chapman the sportscaster for NBC5. HE was AWESOME!

You're kidding, right? It's a sad thing that he died...but as for his sportscasting, I absolutely couldn't stand his mindless exuberance. OK, so he was a step up from John "Penis & Crackerjack" Kelly, but....

Folks:

Just FYI, I knew Mark Giangreco when he was working at WLKY in Louisville and was going by the air name of Mark Del Grego. (Next time you see him mention that name and see what type of response you get!)

The sports anchors have some input but honestly not as much as you think. There are many stations for example where the sports director never appears on the air! The thinking is that someone who doesn't have to worry about going "on air" can do a better job of organizing man power, setting schedules and getting covered what needs to be done.

At union stations especially in the major markets, everyone is only allowed to do certain things. The sports producers job is to line up the show, get the assignments, decide which highlights are going to be run (although they can NOT themselves do the actual editing) and make last minute adjustments. In some stations they write the anchor's copy or conduct interviews over the phone.

I remember Johnny Morris telling me in 1976 when I visited WBBM for a 400 level paper I was doing in college that if he and his camerman were walking down the street and his camera person had a heart attack and died, that he could NOT pick up the camera to shoot. He would have to call to the station and get ANOTHER camera man to come out and take the pictures of the first camera person who died.

Morris could also look over the shoulder of the editor and tell them what highlights he wanted to show but he could NOT physically touch any of the editing equipment. If he did the union could file a grievence against him and he could be fired.

Today the sports producer handles most of the decision making in a sports office if that station does not have a sports director.
