Seriously, if we didn't have Mags, I'd love to have the post-1997 Sammy Sosa on my team. He's a great hitter with an... interesting career. His first 1400+ plate appearances were *awful* (Average OPS+: 84.5). The Cubs finally gave him the chance to start in '93, where he had his first successful season (he probably should've started in '92 also, but I guess the Cubs wanted to show off Derrick May's suckiness). From 1992 to '96 he played well, albeit unspectacular. He took a big dip in 1997, but has been consistently great since then.

There are plenty of problems with the Cubs, but I really don't think Sammy's one of them.

Rozner is usually a good columnist (his Blackhawk coverage is fine, and he's usually OK on baseball issues), but this piece was a bit too fluffy.
