According to Friday morning's Chicago Tribune, the White Sox and U.S. Cellular (nee PrimeCo) are negotiating a naming rights deal for Comiskey Park. The article says it's unclear what would happen to the Comiskey Park name, although Jerry Reinsdorf has reportedly promised Chuck Comiskey that the name of the White Sox' original owners would be somehow preserved. For those of you who are Tribune-registered, here is the link to the article:

From the Chicago Tribune: "Comiskey name may be ready to go wireless" (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-0301310315jan31,1,7968636.story?coll=chi%2Dbusines s%2Dhed)

hmm. Not sure what to think. My fear is that JR is just going to pocket any revenues from the deal.

The Tribune articles says the proceeds would be used for ballpark renovations.

Insofar as the Comiskey name is concerned, I seem to recall officials saying they planned to erect some sort of statue of Comiskey somewhere on stadium grounds, as a way of paying tribute to him, to make up for taking his name off the building.

If this were to happen, would this make Joan Cusack the official advertising spokesperson for the White Sox? Just asking.

Joan Cusack marketing the White Sox? That would be interesting...considering her brother, John, is a Cub fan. Talk about sibling rivalry, huh?

I thought John was a Sox fan? He seems to be one of the few celebs they show at the park consistently.

John may be. I'm not sure because I heard he's from the north side. That point by itself doesn't mean anything, but I was under the impression he was a Cub fan. If he's a Sox fan, then I'll stand corrected.

IIRC, the Cusacks are from Evanston.

How could JR pocket the cash for naming a stadium he doesn't own? Is there a provision that would allow this in the Sox lease? You'd think the stadium authority would make sure it goes to improvements.

(It always annoys me that an expensive, 12-year-old building that I helped pay for needs improvements.)

That has been reported previously as well.....and many people here saw the pictures to prove it...bring on the corporate sponsorship

Truthfully, it really doesn't matter to me whether the name of the place is either "Comiskey Park", or "U.S. Cellular Field", or whatever. The Sox need this money to renovate that ballpark, and I'm glad it looks like they're finally are going to get it. Hopefully, this moolah will be put to good use, and we can finally have a ballpark we can collectively be proud of. Not to mention, I'm a U.S. Cellular subscriber, and I think they've got a pretty good thing going on here.

The same way that JR gets to pocket all the concessions and parking cash from a building he doesn't own. The lease with the state basically gives the White Sox all the revenue generated by the stadium, with the state only getting a token rent payment (no rent, in years when the Sox attendance is truly pathetic).
