The longtime umpire passed away Saturday following a heart attack. He was 64.

And the last game he worked before retirement? The last Sox home game of the 1999 season.

Wow, Merrill was a solid ump. Even better, I read his book: "You're out! And you're ugly too!" was the title if I remember correctly. Great read, lots of injected humor, and a pretty interesting take on the game too.

Sorry to hear Merrill has passed away. One of the more solid umps of his generation.

Correct on the title of this wonderful book--which I was reading when he died.
