Closer- Koch
Set-up man: Marte or Osuna (L vs R)
Long relievers: Glover, Biddle, Wunsch, Almonte?
This should be a solid group yet again. Hopefully, no one coming off of injuries that will make them struggle at first

i'm thinking it will be
closer - koch
set up man - glover
left handed specialist - marte
with wunsch as a second lefty, osuna bridging the gap to glover, and two from the group of almonte, ginter, porzio, sanders, majewski, and maybe stewart. biddle will definately be in long relief if he's not in the rotation.

Marte doesn't have to be a lefty specialist. He does fine against righties as well. Wunsch would be the lefty specialist with Marte and Osuna sharing set up duties, would be my guess. Although with Jerry you never know.

i agree marte doesn't have to be used solely on lefties but i think it'd be a waste if we didn't use him whenever we have a key atbat where we need to get a lefty out because he's left handed and really good. i rate glover over osuna. glover had an era of 1.21 as a reliever last season, i think he deserves a shot as the primary set up man and manuel seems somewhat willing to put him in that role. i guess we'll see what happens.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see Glover starting some time next season. Sigh…

I think Glover should be the setup man.
He is dominant in that role.
Actually, I remember one of the last games against the twins
in a tie game where he got the first two outs and let up a
measly single. Manual promptly gets the "lefty specialist" and
he promptly lets the ball go on a trip to the stands.
So, it doesn't matter who the setup man is, if Manuel doesnt improve in coaching, there will be problems.

I agree with everything except having 8 men in the bullpen, for a total of 13 pitchers. I don't see how the Sox can carry more than 12 pitchers maximum. So instead of picking two from your list, the Sox should only pick one.

I would set it up like this:
Closer - Koch
Set Up (inn. 7 and 8) - Marte and Osuna
Lefty Spec. - Wunsch
Long Relief/Other - Biddle, Glover, and one of Almonte, Ginter (I hope not), Sanders, Stewart, Majewski

I think we have an overabundance of relievers. First, the starters (assuming we acquire no one else):
Buehrle
Garland
Wright
Biddle
Rauch
Now, six relievers:
Koch
Marte
Wunsch
Osuna
Ritchie
Glover
Almonte, Parque, and Ginter all down in AAA.

Long relief- Glover (ritchie? biddle? rauch?)
Oh...and lets not panic if for some chance the bullpen gives up a couple games in the first series like we all did last year. The bullpen is solid.

This is probably the way the pitching staff will be set up, though I wouldn't be surprised to see Ritchie get one last chance to redeem himself for last season's weekly disasters. Garland, Wright, and Rauch all showed signs of improvement throughout the course of 2002, so I expect good things from them. My only concern deals with Manuel's constant "tinkering." The Sox pitchers will be much more effective if he just leaves them alone and allows them to fill specific roles for extended periods of time.

i only count 7 on my list. koch, glover, marte, osuna, wunsch, plus two others from the group i mentioned.
also, ideally i really think we could build a dominate pen if we'd just shell out a minimal amount of money to sign someone like timlin, veres, or maybe fetters. i'm all about giving almonte, majewski, sanders, munoz, etc. a shot if that's a plan but i do also think a cheap free agent could really put us in great shape.
supposedly we considered trading marte and if he's really value part of me wonders if that's a good idea. i feel as though we have an embarassment of luxeries with lefties now with wunsch seemingly returning to form at the end of last season, sanders dominating in the afl, and munoz dominating in winter league. it'll be interesting to see what happens. a good lefthanded reliever is quite valuable these days.

I counted your long reliever Biddle as #8 in the bullpen.

oh. i meant to assume biddle is in the rotation for the time being until we acquire another starter and that if we do acquire another starter he definately has a spot locked up in the pen. so yeah, if biddle doesn't make the rotation you'd take one player from that group of pitchers.

Whats so bad about Ginter? I always liked him

I still believe that with a little work Ginter can become a surprise stud in the pen...when it is working that slider is nasty, he just needs a little more consistency...

i'm also on that bandwagon. i'm a big ginter fan. if he puts it all together and becomes a little bit more consistent, look out.

Yep. I remember last year when he came in this one game, man his slider was moving like hell. I'd have hated to be the hitter at that time. He looked like Mendoza looks at his best on that appearance.
