Looks like Billy Beane wins twice on the Ray Durham deal.

From BA:

Remember the significant draft changes that the owners and players had agreed to while reaching a new Basic Agreement on Aug. 30? They have agreed to disagree on what they agreed upon, sending the whole disagreeable mess to committee purgatory.

A misunderstanding over several elements of the illusory accord, discovered as formalities regarding the Basic Agreement were hammered out, led to a disintegration of all draft changes and the decision by both sides to revert to old rules for at least the time being. So draft-pick compensation for losing major league free agents remains in effect, and the new compensation structure for failing to sign a first-round pick–which could have gone a long way in curbing bonuses, a longtime management goal–has been tabled.

Although I have had numerous reports (surprising as they may be) that the A's are trying to re-sign Durham.

Boy, this is just typical. So now besides trading Durham, paying most of his salary, getting a minor league "b" prospect in trade, and watching Durham lead the A's to a major league record 20 straight victories, it's the ATHLETICS who get the free agent compensation pick if they lose Durham. Un-frickin-believable!

"Outstanding points, PHG. Now we're forced to raise ticket prices some more and cut Frank's salary a bit more, too. We simply can't afford these sorts of losses."

:ohno
"You forgot the most important point. It's all our fault."

And you can add Sandy Alomar Jr with the Rockies and Kenny Lofton with the Giants to that statement as well. If they lose them, those teams get the draft picks!!!

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL Even the fates are against the Sox!

Don't you have to offer them arbitration in order to get compensation?

Yes you do,but most teams will be willing to do it knowing that the player will refuse it,last year the Giants and the Mariners got stuck with players accepting arbitration.
