Out of sheer boredom, I started looking around for old information about the Chicago White Sox. Much to my surprise, I found this: http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/Headlines/August/Biased0826.htm.

It seems that the nickname "The Tinkerer" was, in fact, used prior to the 2002 season. This particular game recap is from August 26, 2001. The entire recap is dedicated to complaining about Jerry Manuel and trashing the already-tarnished reputation of Royce Clayton.

Playing shortstop and batting eighth, Royce Clayton...

LOL! Even I had forgotten about that one.

Most of the references to "The Tinkerer" were based on Manuel admitting himself that he likes to tinker. That was early this summer. Given what you uncovered from that old TBGR, that story just doesn't wash anymore.

Hey, maybe Jerry got the idea from WSI last year???? What trendsetters we are!

:gulp:

This thread is now back.

Edit:

This excerpt could easily apply to this season, as well as 2001.

Jerry the Tinkerer fields another loser line up and squeaks out a win. Who does Jerry Manuel think he's kidding anymore? Certainly nobody in the clubhouse can be buying their manager's misguided thinking, can they?

Indeed! Among other things, we got JM to move Valentin (http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15628&highlight=valentin) and his .764 OPS down in the order, and to bat CLee and Crash second, where they have posted a .964 OPS and a .994 OPS respectively.

Now if we can only get him to play Frank at 1B.

Pink is pipe-dreams or ridiculous ideas that have no basis in reality. Manuel refuses to put Frank at first base, so pink was used.

I would think so. Dumbass is actually JM's middle name.

I realize it's fun to bash Jerry because he doesn't make too many sound baseball calls, but c'mon now! We don't know for a fact if Mrs. Manuel believes in the holy lefty-righty matchup.
