Cardinals president Mark Lamping said Tuesday that a deal to build the team's new stadium across the Mississippi River from its historic home in downtown St. Louis is moving forward quickly and that the team might make its choice in two weeks.

Lamping met with Gov. George Ryan and other state leaders Monday in Springfield. The group has drafted a nearly complete agreement for financing construction of a new ballpark on the east side of the Mississippi River, he said.

''We're in agreement with basic concepts of all of the financial issues,'' Lamping said.

They don't belong in Illinois!!! I live 25 miles away from the proposed location, and I still say they belong in downtown St. Louis. :gulp:

I agree. What the Cardinals currently have in St. Louis (downtown locale within walking distance of hotels and restaurants) is what I wish we had here for our team. And the Ballpark Village plan for the Gateway City would make that even better. Where would this Illinois ballpark go? Where the Casino Queen is?

Build me a new ballpark or I'm moving to St. Louis! Why? So they can be the number 2 team in a smaller market?

"Mercy them Cardinals can play some baseball, but it has nothing to do with Tony LaRussa, I tell you. I know the Busch's personally and their grandson's girlfriend's Dog told me that Tony is hated in the clubhouse. It was a good move when the Sox dumped him. Who was that GM again?"

While we're at it, as far as I can tell, we don't have a Bevington tag; and there are few men in White Sox history who deserve ridicule more than Bevington.

The 2 sites in Illinois with the best chance of landing the stadium are Just South of the Casino Queen along the east riverfront, or at a site adjacent to Gateway International Raceway (right next to that enormous landfill)

I'm sorry, but this just smacks too much of a huge negotiation ploy by the Cardinals to get themselves a new ballpark in downtown St. Louis.

"Can't imagine what ever led you to that conclusion!"

Why they would want to be across the river in any proximity to dreadful East St Louis should tell you what a ploy it is.

First of all, when you cross the river into E St. Louis, there's the Casino Queen and that's it. All of the riverfont is owned by the railroads. There isn't a home located within 1.5 miles. It's barren . I often park at the Metrolink stop at the casino queen and I can tell you that you'd don't realize your in ESL (you don't feel unsafe). To me the real ESL is still 1.5 east. Besides there is an expressway blocking most of ESL from view.

You also have to keep in mind that an East St. Louis stadium could be positioned so that the Mississippi River, the Arch and the downtown St. Louis skyline could be seen beyond the outfield by all of those people watching on television. For them, it wouldn't matter much that the park was on the edge of a slum that rivals Gary, Ind. After all, a sensible ownership would not allow their stadium to turn its back on their downtown. Too bad our park couldn't have done the same.

I doub't it will face directly towards St. Louis since you'd be looking West (towards the Sun in the evening)

You would face the park North West not South East.
