View Full Version : Cubs waive Matthews Jr. and Cairo

I just saw it on the bottom line on ESPN. The Pirates claimed Gary Matthews Jr. off waivers and the Cardinals claimed Miguel Cairo. Matthews was a fan favorite and now he is gone. The Cubs called up Will Ohman and Joe Borowski for AAA Iowa. This is a shock because Matthews was a fan favorite.

can't they pull them back?

They can't pull them back now because they've been claimed.

Unless a team makes the waivers nonreversable (ala Gord Ash last year with Bautista) the team can pull the players back off waivers after they have been claimed. Strange doings if the flubbies gave those two up so easily. They aren't great, but they are popular and the flubbies are in the middle of a pennant race, so any warm body with experience is needed...

They waived "the best defensive CF in baseball "!!! Whoa, what were they thinking? LOL
I might go so far as to say he's the best out of all the centerfielders standing in center when he's playing...
These two players are nothing special, below-average players. Some of you may disagree, Andy McPhail is a good GM. Winning two world series with the TWINS is really really an accomplishment.

Wow, now that I think about it this goes a long way from Matthews being better than Singleton in CF on the all Chicago team. Rowand is better than Tucker too.
