In 2014, the Sox were 28th in ERA, 27th in OPS, and 30th in strikeouts. They went out and added new pitchers. In 2015, the Sox are 24th in ERA, 30th in OPS, and 27th in strikeouts. The improvement is marginal, if at all.

In 2014, the Astros were 30th in ERA, 30th in OPS and 25th in strikeouts. In 2015, the Astros are 4th in ERA, 3rd in strikeouts, and 2nd in OPS.
The difference in front-office performance is stark. And this one isn't because of high draft choices.

The Sox are also dead last in bullpen innings. But despite the bad stats, the Sox have 3 guys with K/9 over 10 (Robertson, Webb, Putnam). Last year, the Sox had zero. These 3 guys should be leaned on.

The Sox are convinced that Jake Petricka with 6.8 K/9 in 2014 and a 6.5 in 2015 belongs in a major league bullpen And then there’s this love of Scott Carroll with his 1.56 WHIP and 3.6K/9. Neither of these guys should be in the pen. Junior Guerra kicked ass in Charlotte. He’s the mop up guy until proven otherwise. Or use Jake Petricka strictly as mop-up. You don’t need 2 of them and at least Guerra has potential.

Robertson, Putnam, Webb and Duke (since we’re stuck with him) are the bullpen. The rest should be shuttled from Charlotte until keepers are found.

Huh, isn't the GM of the Astros some guy they hired in 2012 from outside their system with a proven track record in the front office of a perennial contender?
