And then there were 6

If you read the Tweet linked in this page, they picked up the contract of Zach Putnam from AAA:

The first head has rolled from the lackluster bullpen start. I'm kind've surprised it is Zach Putnam and not David Purcey that has been recalled. This leaves us with only one lefty in the bullpen.

Had to think that there would be some changes to the bullpen after last night's fiasco.

There may be more changes, still. And if Paulino doesn't pitch better, the Sox may look at some options, there, too.

Good thing that they're not just sitting on their asses until 7/31. The problem has been recognized early. Take care of it early.

Matt Thornton is looking pretty good right now, at least he got someone out once in awhile.

Was Veal the worst of the offenders in the BP?

Left-handed relief pitchers are like vampires -- hard to kill. If no one claims him, I suspect Veal will be back in the Sox system.

For my money, the worst offender has been Downs. But because he usually only faces (and walks) one batter per game, it doesn't seem as offensive.

Downs was worse, IMO, but either way, good riddance to Donnie Septimo.

I remember when he was making Prince Fielder look bad in 2012. Now he (and Downs for that matter) have no clue how to pitch to left handed hitters. I'm glad they're doing something. Hopefully this doesn't turn into a 2007 bullpen situation.

Good points. Downs has been worse but they signed him as a FA so they're hoop he turns it around. It didn't cost the Sox as much to DFA Veal.

Veal is dead meat...

I didn't think Veal was the worst of the bunch.

But I guess they don't use the principle of sunk costs, so they won't cut Downs or Bellasario.

Can't say I'll miss him, but I'll admit he looked just slightly better from last year.

For tonight's game, the White Sox need a fresh arm who, in theory, can go a couple of innings rather than a left-hander on a night they have their best left-handed starter going. I would expect Veal wasn't the worst bullpen offender, but I wouldn't expect Veal will be the last bullpen adjustment.

As many problems as teams are having with their bullpens this season, although some of it is really bad defense at the end of games (for details see Red Sox Tuesday night and Mariners Wednesday night and the Royals this weekend), it wouldn't surprise me if the White Sox ended up working out at a very small deal for Veal.

LH Donnie Veal designated for assignment. Sox purchase contract of RH Zach Putnam from AAA Charlotte.

Frank De Los Santos goes from AA to AAA to fill Putnam's spot. Frank Francisco transferred from AAA to Rookie G. Falls to get some work.

Curious - Since their season doesn't start for another two months, what exactly is he doing there that he couldn't be doing in Charlotte?

Getting his stuff and mechanics right in extremely low pressure situations that EST atmosphere provides.

As for Veal, good riddance. Forget the "worst offender" stuff, suck is suck and he sucks. Hopefully, some kids in the minors step up and give us more options to whittle away at the remaining crap sooner rather than later. I would even hope they look at immediate pen help via the draft after the first round.

At least Putnam never walks anybody. Donnie Veal seems like a very nice guy, shame he's such a suckie pitcher.

There is likely a limit to how many players you can keep on the team at all levels. With Frankie Frank coming up to replace another Frank, someone has to move.

I don't think Veal was the worst but he was probably the cheapest. He looked real good against lefties back in 2012 but hasn't looked anywhere near decent since then.

Rienzo is a starter, until a starter slot opens he should be getting his work in the minors.

That might be tomorrow, after the sterling outing by the soon to be departed Paulino.

Sheesh, what an outing this one was. He looked like an Iron Mike out there.

Paulino did look like an Iron Mike! Good call!

Have to think that Rienzo or Scott Carroll will be coming up soon. Has Tommy Hanson pitched at Charlotte yet?
