Avisail Garcia out for the season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder, scheduled to undergo surgery within the next week. X-rays yesterday at Coors Field were negative, but an MRI this morning at Rush University Medical Center revealed the torn labrum.

Nate Jones
has responded well after he had an MRI and epidural when the team discovered the injury is to his lower back.

Gordon Beckham
going to start swinging again today and hopefully work his way back into the lineup in the coming days. Currently don’t have a timeframe on him.

Jeff Keppinger
played three innings in extended spring training on Wednesday and is progressing, should be in the lineup on Friday.
“He’s working his way toward a rehab assignment but not quite there yet,” Hahn said.

I thought Jones' injury was musculature, not structural like a herniated disk or anything. So, what does lower back mean? But the idea of en epidural sure is scary. I'm not sure what that does except numb the pain. Doesn't seem recuperative at all.

Depends what they injected into the epidural space and what the cause of the pain is. Injecting a steroid could treat both the symptoms and the cause (depending on the cause). It's not an uncommon choice of treatment for some forms of low back pain.

I'd really hate to see Semien or Leury Garcia lose their roster spot for Keppinger. I realize they will need to showcase Keppinger as being healthy to try to trade him but the Sox have to decide what is more important to them. Is getting something of value in return for Keppinger or the continued growth for young players like Semien or Leury Garcia worth more?

The only thing they'll ever get for Keppinger, almost no matter how well he plays, is rid of his salary. Beckham's a different story...he could bring something.
So the $6 million or whatever it is salary relief that we'll finally get if we move Keppinger isn't worth the at least 50/50 risk that he could really make the team worse.

Nate Jones
doesn't look good walking around. The more treatment he gets, it's sore," Ventura said. "It's a little more extensive than we first anticipated by just seeing him and what he mentioned when it first happened. Hopefully it starts getting better, but I don't think we anticipated it being this long."

Davidson is struggling thus far, I think it's possible he stays in Charlotte the whole year. That said, I think that also the Sox might just go with Beckham (unless they can deal him at some point), Gillespie, & Semien and just send Keppinger packing.

we're starting to look like the Rangers here. Honestly, I don't want to see Danks starting in CF. I'm assuming he's a better defender than Leury Garcia, but it's brutal seeing him at the plate. I dont understand why they arent upfront about a pitchers injury except maybe for future ticket sales.

I dont understand why they arent upfront about a pitchers injury except maybe for future ticket sales.

Because often they don't know how things will play out unless it's a catastrophic situation. This wasn't so the process of figuring out exactly what's wrong, what's causing the problem and how long until the player can return is trial and error as well as dependent on the player's own ability to heal.

I dont understand why they arent upfront about a pitchers injury except maybe for future ticket sales.

Because if it's not an outright tear it's hard to project how quickly a guy can come back 100% ready to go. The fact that Sale has been throwing BP sessions is a good sign, and obviously in a season that was never meant to be competitive, they're being extra cautious with him.

Chris Sale threw a 40-pitch bullpen session on Monday, probably throw again Wednesday Rehab assignment 10 days to two weeks down the line per Hahn's guess.

Sox have a plan that is day to day based on how Sale feels, but that plan will be more on a need-to-know basis as far as the public is concerned.
"I deserve a certain level of privacy in terms of myself and my teammates and my coaches and training staff and general manager, manager," Sale said. "The more we keep to ourselves the less people can speculate, and that's helped the process a little bit in terms of hecticness coming with what's involved. We're trying to keep this at bay as much as we can and try not to leak too much information out as much as what it is and what it isn't."

I don't think that this is a case of a team be disingenuous to it's fans concerning Sale's injury .. i am a bit worried, but i suppose that is natural considering that the weeks are starting to pile up, but Chris himself said, "I feel much better than when we started this process. There's nothing there today that made me think there should be any steps back or any setbacks." .. that's good enough for me..

Garcia out with shoulder surgery, Jones out with soon to be back surgery, Eaton having wheel problems this early in his career, Sale out for who knows how long with elbow problems early in his career. All major centerpieces in the Sox future, with very little in their system and very few tradeable pieces, Im worried.

Chris Sale
likely to throw another bullpen session Saturday
Ventura said, "things should be clearer following the weekend session. You do have to build him back up to where he feels like he can go back out.
It would be unfair to send him out there knowing he's only going to go four or five innings. You just don't do that with a guy like him."

Adam Eaton
return from injury is uncertain, has been riding a stationary bike.
Rehab assisgnment, will need to see live pitches to get his timing back. "You don't want a guy coming back and not having his timing and then having to catch back up on the fly out here. It usually doesn't work out that well" Ventura said.

Paulino has a 14.00+ ERA at AAA,and Johnson got hammered last night (still maxing out at 88-90 mph)- so I doubt they are going anywhere any time soon- especially with the way Rienzo/Noesi/Carroll have pitched (with one going down when Sale returns).

With all the elbow injuries this year (even some that initially weren't diagnosed as being serious), maybe everyone is secretly scared for a worst case scenario and are perfectly fine with them taking their time. It does seem like it's a bigger deal than what they first let on though.

Rienzo has pitched well enough as has Noesi, who the Sox really seem to like. Carroll, on the other hand, has no business on the MLB roster and should be sent down shortly if they don't wait until his next start. Nice story, but a short one.

It should be noted that Johnson didn't get hammered last night at all. Buffalo had a BABIP of .529 with a couple of infield hits. He also stuck out seven and walked none over 6 innings. In his three starts, he has a 17/2 K/BB ratio in 19 innings and a 2.84 ERA despite his horrible luck. Johnson can get AAA hitters out. This is the year our top pitching prospect needs to get his work in.

His velocity is concerning but I say that from his time in the majors. His readings in AAA can't be relied on from what I've read. Supposedly off a tick or two. Regardless, learning to pitch with a little less velocity can only help moving forward. His problem was throwing strikes and it's pretty obvious he was throwing scared. There's no reason to think he won't get his velocity back, he needs to work on pitching and throwing strikes, not worry about his velocity.

This good news.

It's very good news. But it begs the question as to why the Sox didn't order these diagnostic tests a week earlier when it became obvious that Abreau was having significant problems. I'm no doctor, but armed with the knowledge that the cause of Jose's discomfort was inflammation and not structural damage, the Sox may have elected to treat the problem differently/aggressively (e.g. a few days off and corticosteroids) and perhaps avoided a two week stay on the DL. Seems like the Sox batted out of order here -- do the test first to determine the problem and then decide whether the treatment will require a trip to the DL.

Maybe someone with medical training can chime in.

KANSAS CITY – Prior to tonight’s game at Kansas City, the Chicago White Sox placed right-handed pitcher Matt Lindstrom on the 15-day disabled list with a sublexing peroneal (outside) tendon in his left ankle and purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Javy Guerra from Class AAA Charlotte.

Lindstrom, 34, suffered the injury in the ninth inning of last night’s victory over the Royals while attempting to field a bunt by Alcides Escobar and will return to Chicago to undergo further examination. He is 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA (7 ER/19.0 IP) and six saves in 19 appearances this season.

Guerra, 28, is 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA (5 ER/19.1 IP) and three saves in 14 relief appearances with Charlotte in 2014, limiting right-handers to a .229 (8-35) average. He was claimed by the White Sox off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 26.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Guerra has gone 4-5 with a 2.90 ERA (33 ER/102.1 IP), 87 strikeouts and 29 saves over parts of three major-league seasons with the Dodgers (2011-13). He recorded a 2.31 ERA (12 ER/46.2 IP) with a team-high 21 saves in 23 chances over 47 appearances as a rookie in 2011 and followed with a 2.60 ERA (13 ER/45.0 IP) and eight saves in 2012.

Guerra will wear uniform No. 41.

The White Sox 40-man roster increases to 40.

TDog
05-20-2014, 01:47 PM
Guerra emerged as the Dodgers' closer around the All-Star break of his rookie season, 2011, and saved something like 20 of 22 games. He blew his third save of the 2012 in his 11th opportunity, in a game against the Cubs in early May, the Dodgers moved him out of the closing roll, and he never had another major league save. The Dodgers moved Jansen into the role. He's not having a great season, but he's still there in the ninth when the Dodgers are up by three runs or less.

Having not seen Guerra pitch in a long time (I did see him hit in a game against the Reds in which he walked in his only major league appearance), I would be just guessing that he might be coming up to be the closer. Francisco doesn't instill confidence. Webb has been having control issues. Belisario might be tops on my list of pitchers I'd like to see closing games if you insist on designating one pitcher. But that was true before Lindstrom took the mound Monday.

When the White Sox are in town, Avisail Garcia (http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=541645) shows up at U.S. Cellular Field to rehab his surgically repaired left shoulder, but leaves before the game starts.

hoped he would be able to return on Friday, but he was held out of the lineup and is day to day.

"It's probably hamstring more than anything," Ventura said. "Similar to what he had last time [when Eaton was placed on the 15-day disabled list], just not to the degree that he would need to sit out as much. But I think it gets to the point where [his legs] are tired and sore, and you have to rest them."

According to Rick Hahn, the surgeons tell them there is no greater risk for Avisail injuring his shoulder now versus 6 months from now. Therefore, why not have him get some valuable ABs this year? They seem to be taking it slow with him and easing him back into baseball activities. It is basically like Spring Training for him. I'm pretty sure the Sox wouldn't risk this kid's future if they thought there was any danger.

I was a little apprehensive with the mound being a little bit wet, but everything felt as close to normal as I think it's going to feel," Lindstrom told reporters in Charlotte after his effort. "I've put a lot of hard work in to try to get back to this point. I made most of my pitches. I was a little disappointed in some of my breaking stuff.
"But I think that had a little to do with the rain. Overall, it was a good test."

Avisail Garcia
Robin Ventura said the club plans to reevaluate Garcia after 50 at-bats. Garcia went 1-for-3 in a rain-shortened game on Tuesday night.

“His body has held up,” Hahn said. “He has made certain plays in the outfield the last few days that have forced him to let it go a little bit. There’s been no setbacks. We don’t have a magic number or magic performance level in mind that he has to hit, it’s more a matter of day in and day out seeing consistent performance and physically feeling strong. So far it has gone well and hopefully we’re coming to an end of it in several days or a week or so.”

Welcome back, Avi!

Hopefully there is a physical reason he's been so terrible this year.

Nice to see Avisail back in the lineup. If he and Abreu want to form the heart of the Sox order for the next 10 years, I'm good with that.

Adam Eaton
"Throwing was a big step, and so was swinging left-handed. I might actually be swinging and hitting a baseball the next couple of days. I'm not sure. I think I'm due to come off [the DL on] Sunday, so I would imagine it probably would come in the next couple of days where we would actually hit a baseball and go from there."

Is it possible to start injuring some of these relievers on purpose, so we don't have to be subjected to watching them crap down their legs, night after night?

Adam Eaton
took batting practice on Wednesday night, will be eligible to return for Sunday's series finale with the Yankees, though general manager Rick Hahn doesn't expect it. Eaton should, however, be able to return for the start of next week's homestand.
