Regardless of what happens on the field, the White Sox have certainly improved the quality of the product they offer at concession stands.

I thought I read something about a 12-scoop banana split served in a Sox batting helmet.

I'm a big guy and I love ice cream, but there is no way possible I could finish that.

Three pound sundae. Brooks said it is for families, but if one person wants to scarf down one by him/herself.......

Yeah, and nacho helmets are for "groups", too.

On the original topic, I will be getting me lots of chicken and waffle sandwiches this year. One of my favorites.

Unfortunately not available in the general 100 and 500 level concession areas operated by Sportservice, the chicken and waffle sandwich only offered in areas served by Levy's (Club Level, Diamond Suite, Stadium Club). Pretty sure that's true of the giant ass banana split sundae.

Club level seats are pretty reasonably priced seats, IMO, especially considering what you get for the price. I love sitting in those seats.

Never tried one of those sandwiches. Forgive the ignorance, but what kind of condiments do you eat on chicken and waffle sandwiches? Syrup seems messy as hell.

Syrup, honey and hot sauce are the most popular ones. And yes, they can get messy. But the flavor.

That's like eating 4 pints of B&J in one sitting. I have no doubt there are people on these forums who can do that, but I doubt they will be happy afterwards. In the past when I've been at peak weight and able to eat a lot more than I do/can now, 3 pounds at one time was pushing my limits hard. Remember that doesn't include the liquids you consume which add a pound for every pint you consume also, so if you have 2 bears with this sundae you are at 5 pounds in your belly. Most people will be in at least moderate distress if they do that.

Trust me, I speak from experience on this matter...

I guess this thread is as good a place as any to mention the "2014 Ballpark Recommendations & Policies" that the Sox just posted at whitesox.com (I'd give the entire link but it keeps giving me error messages when I try to)

There's some interesting stuff that I'm not entirely sure we knew involving stuff like parking prices and new security, but I'm particularly interested in this:

For Opening Day, Monday, March 31, fans holding tickets for the upper level will not be able to access other levels of the ballpark. This policy ensures fans may safely and comfortably enjoy the game with access to the areas of the ballpark where they bought tickets.

So that implies that (for the first time in years, unless I'm out of the loop) the policy will NOT be in the place during the rest of the season, right?

FWIW, there has been a metal detector installed at the main entrance to the office behind the plate.

I stopped by there yesterday to pick up something for our school's fundraiser and had to go through the detector before approaching the reception desk.

I think this is one of the dumbest things the Sox do. There is a lot stuff on the main concourse that that UD tix / people can't get to. Just plain dumb. I have been to 36 major league parks and they are the only ones do something like that with the exceptions of you can't into the outfield seats / level if you have tix anywhere else in Fenway, Wrigley and County Stadium.

There are now plenty of option to buy cheap lower level tickets, either through the team directly, or the secondary market. Problem solved.

Given the professional looking ads I've seen so far, I'm hoping the Homer Glen Middle School AV club has been officially retired and we do get a professional looking opening montage. I don't care if it's not the same as the 2004-2012 intro as long as it's something to get the crowd going.

....Of course it still is going to be shown on that woefully out of date scoreboard.

Seems to be a noticeable space between the 11 and the 16 in the retired numbers.

Just a hunch, but they had to do so much work just to get the field in shape after the winter that they probably didn't want to spend any extra time/effort on something like that.

This sundae has gotten national attention. Great job by the marketing department. How about an eating contest where they see who can eat one of these sundae the fastest (like the hot dog eating competitions they have)

I would also be impressed if somebody post a video of somebody eating the whole thing by him or herself and then putting the helmet on their head or somebody else's head.

Or maybe the players could use this instead of the shaving cream pie in the face. How about a 12 scoop sundae in your face?

I noticed that as well on the telecast. It looks a lot better than what it did before, especially when they had the All Star game graphics.

When they completed the original renovations, I was hoping they would use a brick cover, similar to that on the main concourse and Fundamentals, however this is still an improvement.

It's hard to believe the ballpark is already almost 25 years old so I guess some new paint in areas is required.

There will always be $15 lower deck seats and $7 uppers. If the team get's good, yeah, the demand will go up, but not the price. Not sure this year, but last year at the ticket offices there was a huge poster about the $7 seats. They will try to up-sell you, but that's business.

If they wanted to get rid of the black/silver uniforms and Old English logo and go back to the 83 uniforms as the preferred brand of the White Sox... they would just get rid of the black/silver uniforms and Old English logo and go back to the 83 uniforms as the preferred brand of the White Sox. But they haven't done that. Look at whitesox.com - overwhelming silver/black with the Old English logo. And as far as promotions go, they don't have pictures of them all up yet so it's hard to know for sure, but there are only two (including this one) that they specifically call "1983" promotions. And they didn't wear the 1983 uniforms at all the whole first series, so it hardly seems like they're really pushing it that hard.

Not really. They wouldn't want the fan backlash. When they first started with the idea of throwback uniforms, Brooks indicated that they only wanted to reflect teams/uniforms that represented a significant winning achievement in SOX history. That's why they were originally reluctant to wear the early 70s pinstripes.

They keep saying how popular the 83 uniforms are with fans, however it seems as though most of the fans I talk with aren't that crazy about them. They served a purpose at a particular time, and outside of the 83' season which ended prematurely after a great regular season of 99 wins, they don't really represent a winning era of White Sox baseball like the late 50s/early 60s era with the black and red trim pinstripes. I just think JR has a soft spot for the uniforms as they represent his first real mark on the team, outside of the failed Sportsvision.

I hope they keep the black and silver forever. Everyone here knows how much I like the uniforms. That said, I suppose the smart marketing maneuver would to keep the '83 stuff around in a limited form to push it for more money as long as it sells (and the niche market may not last long). I don't mind the throwbacks occassionally. The current uniform set, though, is classic and timeless.

I guess it all depends on what kind of fan you talk to. I doubt older fans (or even people who were adults in 1983) are huge fans of those 1983 uniforms, but I know lots of younger people who like them a lot (and I see them wear a lot of the stuff). I have no idea if JR has a soft spot for them or not, but I can promise you that the people who wear the stuff actually like it, they're not doing it out of some sort of tribute to JR.

I think for most of my peers, and myself, the 83 jerseys are something of a novelty -- they're so unique, and they're "retro" without being so old that they're of another time. That said, as they've become ubiquitous, they're beginning to lose their novelty. I can't speak for the 40+ crowd or the youngins, but for 30-somethings, I think the Sox are verging on running this one into the ground pretty soon.

I'm not crazy about the actual 83 uniforms the team wears, although I am OK with them as an occasional retro throwback.

But I DO really like the retro batterman logo and the block "SOX" on various other gear, like the blanket in question, sweatshirts, jackets, etc.

I know that is probably splitting hairs.

I feel the same way. Always liked the logo when introduced. 1983 unis not so much. I do own several items with the logo.

I understand that no one would wear this merchandise as a tribute to JR, it's just that the SOX organization has decided that this is "the" alternate jersey, cap, etc. to promote. My question is that with such a rich tradition of diverse uniforms, some great and some not so great, why do they continue to promote this particular uniform style?

I can also appreciate that the Old English SOX script is basically the same regardless of the color of the uniforms that it has appeared on over the past 60 years so it's probably not a good marketing idea to make an alternative uniform with the same design. Altough I would love to see an all-white alternate home uniform (no pinstripes)

I think it's sort of just a general nostalgia for the era that goes through all of baseball (examples: Milwaukee and Toronto have/had very similar programs of bringing back their 80s era uniforms, and Toronto went as far as switching back to a modernized version full-time, the O's went back to a 80s-like hat logo, and Tampa Bay even made a fake "1979" throwback). It helps that there's the hook of winning the division (which is why it's always a "1983" throwback even though they wore the same uniform, give or take a patch, for give years), but I really think it might have been a thing anyway.

As for other uniforms, yes, we've had some good ones (and I would love if some anniversary year we do something similar to what the Cubs are doing this year), but I don't think you can really make the argument that any other one is as distinctive and different (and therefore as likely to help sales and get new fans interested) as 1983.

Don't know if anybody mentioned this or not, but I just noticed that the "Home of the 2005 World Series Champion" sign painted on back of the matrix board facing the Dan Ryan is gone. It's been replaced by a sign honoring the HOF induction of Frank.

That's really good news.
