I wonder if Nieto made the team or is there a trade on the horizon

Makes sense to keep Nieto, since they'd lose him if they didn't and it's not as if a backup catcher is going to make or break this team anyway.

In related news, Fangraphs projects the Sox to have the least production out of the C position in the league.

Based on his spring numbers I don't see any reason not to give Nieto a shot to stick, we badly need catchers in the organization anyway.

He can't be any worse than Flowers and could pick up a lot from our pitchers and Cooper.

Phegley needs to play every day, so the move makes sense.

Phegley has options? I assume he will be going to AAA.

Yes, but on THIS team he would be a luxury we shouldn't be paying for.

Agree....Phegley still can make a comeback...catchers are scarce, so he will get another look.

Another awesome thread title from Rockab- er, Fastball23. Nice work, chap.

He couldn't get it done. I would prefer having Nieto in AA so there might be a minor trade. I also wonder if they are trying to get Cervelli.

Isn't that another way of saying he was cut from the major league roster?

I think I have read that Flowers is considered a good defensive catcher, which baffles me because last year I thought he struggled as much at block pitches as AJ did - and AJ is a hell of a lot older. I can deal with the poor offensive production if the catcher could consistently catch.

Phegley feels blindsided by this. Tough luck, dude. Maybe you should hit well longer than your first week with the big club.

I suppose. When I see "cut" with no other context it implies something else to me.

I cleaned up the thread title. The original title made it sound like something that happened in 1948 ("Phegely was cut" is past tense.)

I took it as DFA'd/outrighted. I guess I'm the only one. Deepest apologies.

Yes, but he's a rule V draft guy so if he's not on the major league roster all year he has to be offered back to Washington. If the Sox think he's any good, they probably shouldn't risk that.

Also, I didn't realize until right now that he's Cuban. That means we have to keep him, just to further the apparent goal of filling the entire roster with Cubans.

It was the right call. Phegley is not a major leaguer. The guy looked like he had never seen a breaking ball before in his life last year. He also sucks defensively. Nieto atleast is a strong defensive catcher, something we lacked.

The headline of that article is ridiculous. They have a quote from Phegley in the article that says the news wasn't a total shock, but the headline says he was blindsided? Well done CSN.

Can we DH for the catcher instead of the pitcher?

During spring training, I have thought that the Sox would deal for a catcher. I am starting to think that the Sox don't like the available deals out there and will break camp with Flowers and Nieto.

I believe that Nieto definitely has upside and understand why the Sox want to keep him in the organization.

Dont know about that, every team seems to have a couple, :)....just kidding I know what you meant, GOOD catchers are scarce these days, and we seem to be leading the pack.

I don't know, man, but Tyler received the back very well the two times I saw him this spring-especially today.
