I'm not sure if it's usually a mod that starts this thread but I figured we are close enough to Opening Day to start making predictions for the White Sox in 2014. And it also gives me an excuse to shamelessly promote a show I did that will be airing on CAN-TV as part of Northwestern's "Medill News Makers" show. There's also a cameo by WSI's very own LipMan1!

http://news.medill.northwestern.edu/chicago/news.aspx?id=229258

My prediction for the Sox is that they will come in 4th place and go 75-87. I think De Aza will be dealt before the trade deadline and for some reason, I wouldn't be shocked if someone takes a gamble on Dunn.

What do you guys think about 2014?

Excellent job interviewing Lip.

Ill wait awhile till I make this years prediction, starting pitching is currently concerning me, hopefully it will get on track before spring training is over.

Not good, but not as bad as last year (thank god) and starting to move back in the right direction.

My pick is 77-85, and over .500 if most of the kids pan out.

This year is all about young talent supplanting overpaid and underperforming veterans.

Johnson, Axelrod, Nieto, Abreu, Semien, Davidson and Eaton will have their ups and downs, but they should be fun to watch.

Dunn, Flowers, Beckham, Keppinger and Viciedo will be traded, non-tendered or let go as a FA.

Danks will have a nice comeback season and Paulie will go out with a bang.

81-81, 3rd place, and a sexy pick for AL darkhorse for the 2015 season

I predict the Sox will be near the .500 mark, probably a bit below. 78-84.

I predict the most exciting position player we'll see this year is Adam Eaton. He's going to have a good if not great year as our leadoff man. Abreu is a close second in this "most exciting" category.

Glass half full guy here.....79-83. A return to respectability...with young guys building toward the future.

I agree and add Chris Sale to the "most exciting" mix.

I do think the Sox will be better than .500, but only a game or two.

I don't think the White Sox will be above .500, as I said earlier, but I think that this year might be a bit like 1971 when the Sox finished under .500 but were exciting. Hopefully that means 2015 can be like 1972 and the Sox will be contending.

I predict this season will have ups and downs, but will confirm our belief that Rick has us going in the right direction. Looking forward to strong first (full) seasons for Abreu and A. Garcia.

Hope springs. Not feeling a lot of it right now, but any baseball is better than a 6 month winter. .500 is out of reach. Worse than 2013 isn't. The pitching has me scared silly.

Surprise me, guys.

Better than last year, but the usual. In the race until early September, Tigers pull away and we're at the .500 area to end season. 76-82 wins

It will be a challenge for them to win more than 75 games w/ the unbalanced schedule and the Royals, Indians, and Tigers strong. While I'm excited for the young players, 1/2 will be decent and develop and 1/2 will probably stink. W/ no veteran core, that does not bode well. I do think the pitching will be decent, however. Also, really dig Garcia- could be a Mags w/ slightly less power...

83 wins.

Abreu- RoY

Avisail Garcia makes All Star team.

Nice bounceback season for Ramirez.

Johnson establishes himself as a work horse RH starter in the rotation.

Dunn plays his last game with the White Sox- much rejoicing.

Sox bring back diamond patch.

I'm a believer in the Impossible Dream. You have to dream big in life and think positive, otherwise you can become another Jay Mariotti. I said earlier that the White Sox will finish 100-62. I would like to change my prediction. I feel they will finish 106-56. It will be easy to achieve that this season. I firmly believe A. Garcia is the real deal in right field. With the additions of Eaton, Abreu and Davidson the White Sox have a great core of players who will contribute big time in 2014. I like our first 3 starting pitchers of Sale, Quintana and Johnson. John Danks will make a great comeback this year and Paulino will give the White Sox a solid 5th starter. When all of this happens this year I figure making the 2014 Playoffs will be easy. The White Sox will be one of the big stories in baseball in 2014.

Yep, on both counts.

Would rather keep DeAza for his hitting/speed combo and flexibility and move Viciedo for some futures (Catcher, please) while his potential value is fairly high.

IMO, Axe looks to take a step up this year if the Sox stop using him as a starter. Considering our other options below setup, he could move up in the bullpen mix.

I think De Aza will have a strong season this year- he's looked very good in the few spring training games I've watched- I think he's a very good 4th OF- but I don't like him as an every day starter.

But for a rebuilding team- De Aza turn 30 this year and J. Danks is looking much improved (so a good fit as a LH 4th OF)- so if he's productive and can generate trade value- I think you need to move him.

For the short term- I'd prefer De Aza as our LH DH (with Danks as an additional OF) and just release Dunn (stinking up again in spring training) and move on-

78-84, 3rd place
Dunn has decent 1st half and traded by deadline
Abreu is ROY
Sale 16-5, 2.83 ERA, 231 Ks
Davidson, Abreu & Garcia all hit over 20 HRs
Playoffs in 2015

83-79. Second in division. Abreu is strong ROY candidate. Avisail Garcia has excellent season. Sale finishes in top 3 for AL Cy Young. People outside Chicago realize Sale is pretty damn good. Sox announce changes in radio booth for 2015.

Paul Konerko hits .300 in his part time duty.
Some team gets a big injury and gets desperate for a trade, which opens the door for Adam Dunn to be traded.
Jose Abreu is the runaway rookie of the year.
Adrian Nieto will be the starting catcher in the second half.
The new guys will be fun to watch, but will have their ups and downs.
Sox win 78 games, but will have a strong September.

The pitching so far in spring training has been bad. It scares the heck out of me. If Quintana goes south this year all they can count on is Sale. I look at the relief staff and I really dont see much. The hitting does look better but not to the point that they will be able to slug their way to a decent record. I am hoping things brighten up but going for triple digit losses is a real possibility.

The Bovada over/under line for victories:

Detroit 89.5
Kansas City 82.5
Cleveland 80.5
WHITE SOX 75.5
Minnesota 70.5

I think that's a good line for the Sox as I don't feel strongly either way. It's probably going to be hard to exceed that if Danks is in the rotation, in my opinion.

If anyone cares, the Cubs are at 69.5, higher than only Houston at 62.5.

Abreu is receiving respect. He's the fifth choice to lead MLB in home runs at 15-1. Chris Davis and Miguel Cabrera are the favorites at 13/2 followed by Giancarlo Stanton (10/1) and Prince Fielder (12/1).

In case anyone actually wants to place a bet on this stuff, PM me and I'll give you my discount code.

I also predict that DJ will annoy me by the 5th inning of Opening Day-

You give him that long? I know reviews of Farmer and DJ are generally bad, so I'm not sure why that pair continues to get thrown out there.

I give the Sox 76-86, but we'll be very competitive even after dumping some guys at the deadline. Sox fans will party the day Dunn leaves the Sox, no matter if it's by trade or FA. I have to think he signs some cheap veteran deal somewhere next year. I pray someone needs a DH at the deadline this year and we can ship him out to save $$$.

76 wins, 4th place.

I think Erik Johnson will impress us, catching will be a major headache again this year, and the Sox will trade at least one veteran player at the trade deadline.
